iTunes 7.4: A First Look

There's surprisingly little to report about the iTunes 7.4 update. Some has appeared but so far the store does not yet support Ringtone purchase or editing (that's still coming soon). I sorted through the iTunes string files to put together this collection of strings related to the new Ringtone functions.

Some readers have reported that iTunes 7.4 installation reset their preferences. You may want to check your Shopping Cart/1-Click purchase options to make sure they haven't been overwritten. Mine were fine.

Notice any other changes to iTunes? Let us know in the comments.

@buffettfan33: I'm quite sure the sorting option (movie, tv show, music video) has been there since they introduced video on the iTunes Store. It's not new in 7.4 for sure.

I am quite annoyed that they haven't fixed the issue with syncing photos to the appletv when iPhoto 08 is installed. The new iPhoto event structure is still not supported by iTunes.

iPhone-Outlook sync may have been fixed:
I know a lot of iPhone users have been having some version of the problem I've been having--my calendar and contacts synced fine with Windows Outlook early on, then calendar stopped syncing while contacts continued to work fine.

I tried lots of iTunes reinstalls and other jive to fix it but finally got it working tonight. Details:

I had tried Electra Glide's 16-step fix at http://www.everythingiphone.com/forum/windows-pc-and-iphone/outlook-calender-sync-problem-fixed-5323-4.html#post71306 a couple times, but to no avail--was still getting "outlook sync add-in" errors every time (contacts always synced fine but calendar always failed, after having worked fine for a few weeks initially). I tried a couple additional fixes--got rid of recurring appointments in Outlook and deleted event notes that contained paragraph/line breaks. Still no dice though.

Finally, I got it working tonight after I did three things:
--uninstalled iTunes using Electra Glide's method (which is mostly the same as Apple's method but a little more thorough, including a registry clean and deleting the apple computer folders in all Documents and Settings subfolders (while leaving /my music/iTunes in place) )
--deleted repeating and multiday appointments on my iPhone (i.e. converted them to individual appointments lasting no more than one day) and deleted appointment notes that had paragraph/line breaks
--installed the new version of iTunes (7.4.0) from scratch.

And it works! I'm not sure whether iTunes 7.4 is the real solution (it may be, as I suspect the problem began for me when I installed iTunes 7.3.2), or whether the other steps above were important too. But I'm relieved nonetheless.

@buffettfan33, I'm certain that the "previous" and "next" buttons in the get info window have been there for a long time ... a long, long time.

v7.0.2 is the earliest I've got lying around and that has the buttons.

iToner is broken by it too. Lame. Everytime you open iTunes and it resynchs, it kills anything iToner puts on there.

I just downloaded and installed iTunes 7.4 and now jailbreak in iFuntastic is not working, so I can't add any of "my" ringtones. Any thoughts?

Can anyone elaborate on the closed captioning?
I see an option to 'Show/Hide Closed Captioning' - but how is a user supposed to know if a video actually has captioning available? I can't seem to locate this info...

The three things I noticed:

1.) "Get Info" on a video (preferably one that you've added yourself), you'll see that there is a new tab labeled "Sorting" where you can change the video kind between TV Show, Movie, and Music Video. Now when you add a converted TV show into iTunes you can actually make it show up in the TV Show section!

2.) Also in the "Get Info" window, there are "Previous" and Next" buttons so you don't have to close the Get Info window when editing a large amount of songs at the same time.

3.) Finally, IF you have playlists in folders, it is now shown that way under the "Sync Selected Playlists" tab when you have an iPhone connected (and probably an iPod too).

The Info tab on iPhone now has an option to add contacts to a certain group when added on the go

...and the Music Tab allows you to select entire playlist folders instead of manually clicking all playlists
