Fix the Leopard folders?

We've previously posted on Leopard's Dock problem (viz. it doesn't work well on the side because of the reflections, etc.). Now, Brandon Walkin has an interesting post on his IndieHIG blog about Leopard's default folder icons. It seems that Leopard's icon art (so far) leaves a lot to be desired - aesthetically and functionally. He argues that the Leopard folder icons don't fit well in the the Aqua interface and fail to convey important information at a glance. I think he's basically right...what about you?

I'll switch the folder icons as SOON as I can find a way to do it -

1. Low contrast and flat appearance is drab, dull, Windows-like, sort of CIA-ish from a low-budget movie. Ick.
2. Even worse, on the Dock the hierarchical menus have disappeared. BAD APPLE! I found XMenus from Devon technologies, but I'd rather have my hierarchical menus back. I have WAY to many files to not nest them inside other files. What were they thinking????

The Leopard Folders are *insipid*. They are politically correct 100% recycled model consumer *drek* frozen stiff inside a high-gloss universe awash in sight and sound. They are the speed bumps in Cover Flow which slow down the content you want to see when you are browsing the file flow of recursively opened directories. It's about using the sublingual part of your brain to ski through a forest of images and then having to climb back up the hill each time you have to READ a folder title. The symbols are some kind of hideous internationalese, the sort of things stuck to the walls of airplane rest rooms on international flights. And the symbols themselves ON the folders ... how has our New York coffee cup symbol come to mean LIBRARY? Hello?
You bros LIKE them?? Give me a break.

They are some kind of interpretive

Horrible horrible horrible. 'Public' has always been 'the yellow folder' to me. Now I have to read stuff. Boo simplicity taken too far.

For those people who are concerned about he lack of visual cues and worried about putting things in the wrong folder, why not just drag and drop to the Finder window's side-bar (or Save window side-bar) where the pictorial icons are? the even work as spring-loaded folders if you need to drill down. The best thing is, they are always there, in any Finder window, not just your Home folder.

Do you struggle to put things in the correct folder inside your documents folder, for instance? Because all these folders are identical unless you have changed the icons. Me, I just read the name of the folder.

As mine and other's comments have suggested, OS X is moving toward a search and metadata driven file system. Manual organisation of files at the directory level is less necessary (iTunes, iPhoto, smart folders etc.).

It's OK for folders to just look like folders because they don't actually matter as much as they used to.

It's what's on the inside that counts ...
or something.

I hate to think that this discussion is falling into groups of those who 'get it' and those who don't. Of course, both groups think that they are the ones who get it and the other group has no taste ...

Bottom line, if you don't like them, change them. It really isn't hard.

Leopard is shaping up to be a really powerful OS, don't be fooled by the lack of glassy eye-candy.
Did I mention that it's what's inside that counts?

Do you think maybe they are leaving a few details out (like 'real' folder icons) so that we all have something exciting to find out when Leopard is actually released?

I don't mind the orientation, and the color is pleasant, but I don't like the lack of color/contrast in the icons. The icon color is a major visual cue (to me, at least) that I've got the right folder.

I imagine there are a wide range of opinions on this, but I've personally missed the once-upon-a-time ability to colorize/tint folders via Labels - just colorizing the folder name isn't enough on anything but a bland desktop. If this feature came back, maybe the new icons would be okay; I'd rather not have to resort to third-party icons.

(And Brian's post was hilarious!)

What sold me on the new icons is the fact that they are now the same perspective as the rest of the files in Finder.

Looks like the 3rd party market for Leopard theme enhancers is going to be a vibrant one!

WAY Right!

But I agree to fix both parts the really just need to be re-colored there's nothing really wrong witth the shape.

In fact only coloring just the icons would help a ton!

It took a little time to get used to them, but I think the new icons look great.

How could anyone not like them. They're System 7 retro:
