MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0
If you have recently bought a MacBook or MacBook Pro you should check Software Update posthaste. Apple has just released MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0 which corrects an issue with Journaling on those machines. It would seem that a number of MacBook and MacBook Pros left the factory without Journal turned on. This update simply enables Journaling on your Startup volume. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Nice Timing!!! My Macbooks HDD died, and I am just getting a new one today, so that means fresh install which means software updates!!!
(FYI I am trying to be optimistic)

I noticed that about 4 days ago on my MBP. I've since turned it on, but I'll install this just to make sure all is well.

Damn I got all excited when I saw an update for Macbooks. I was hoping Apple had finally owned up to the high failure rate of MacBook hard drives.

Pete, Are you sure this isn't the same problem? Several Apple store employees accused me of dropping, or abusing my MBP cause it would not reboot. They claimed my HD must've been damaged. Meanwhile after many FSCK-HSF's I managed to get it back. Several days latter same thing. Until I wiped and reformatted my system (enabling journaling) about 3 weeks ago. Since then no a problem.

So no hope that this update will fix my blackBook's peeling outer coating? I keep hoping it's a cocoon with a faster blackBook running Leopard inside...

@ Verde.
No it is a different problem. System profiler clearly states that my hard drive is journaled (and always has). As far as I can tell, the problem only occurs with the Core Duo MacBooks and not with the later Core 2 Duos.
Moral of the story (again) *Never Ever* by a first generation Apple product or first generation anything.

Mine also came un-journaled. I noticed it in passing one day and was very confused, as I have never reformatted my HD. I shrugged it off and figured I'd fix it when I do a clean install for Leopard. It didn't occur to me that Apple screwed up with the default install.
Anyway, I did the update and it seems fine.

Im on hold with apple- after installing the update and successfully enabling journaling on my MBP2.417, it refused to boot off the cd! wow- no clue why, and not particularly good- anyone got an idea? Ive unplugged all peripherals.
