Mac OS X Up-to-Date covers machines bought 10/1 thru 12/29
You crave the shiny goodness that is OS X 10.5 Leopard... we know you do. Still, you'd rather buy that new computer now instead of waiting for the chaos and long lines once the new system ships -- can you get a cheap upgrade? We now have the answer: with Apple's OS X Up-to-Date program, you're covered.Any qualifying Macs (or XServes, for 10.5 Server up to date) purchased between October 1 2007 and December 29 2007 that ship with 10.4 Tiger are eligible for a $9.95 US upgrade to Leopard. Visit Apple's Up-to-Date page at http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ for program details and the necessary forms.
Thanks, Jeremy!

Am an American living in China; bought my MacBook pro new from Best Buy in Shanghai on Oct. 28 after they announced the free upgrade (I knew the MacBook Pro I was buying didn't have Leopard pre-installed); panicked when I realized that the free upgrade to Leopard only applied to US and Canadian purchases. HOWEVER, I went online, input my computer's serial number, made up a Best Buy that I bought it at in California, and had my free upgrade sent to my mother's address in the US; I guess Apple doesn't track where computers are purchased, just that they have a serial number that could have been manufactured & sold in the right timeframe. As long as you're shipping to a US or Canadian address, you should be able to get it. I just received mine (forwarded on to me from my mom, of course).
I'd recommend giving it a try even if you bought within a few days of the Oct. 1st deadline, or if you bought overseas. I was sure it wouldn't work because my MacBook Pro box and instructions are all in Chinese, but... it did! And why not? I spend a ridiculous premium on my computer here, and shouldn't have to pay for a full Leopard upgrade just because I live in China. It doesn't exactly encourage people over here to stop pirating software when we can't even get legitimate and well-deserved upgrades for free.
Just got an email from apple that my iMac was shipped today, I placed the order on 17th, so will it come with the leopard pre-loaded? or will I need to pay the S/H to get the upgrade...
The weird thing is the estimate shipping date on the order confirmation email was 26/10, so they shipped EARLIER!!!
of course it will come preloaded on all new macs after 10/26, thus the reason for this program, so everyone doesnt get pissy, like with the iphone price drop, all the "but i just bought one"ers
