BONG! Welcome to Macintosh

Am I the only person who still whispers, "Welcome to Macintosh" upon hearing the Mac start-up sound, even though that message stopped appearing on our screens years ago? It's Pavlovian, I swear. Hello, TUAW readers, I'm Christina Warren and I'm a new member of the TUAW (and also the Download Squad) team. My excitement over Leopard's impending release is only tempered by my genuine geek glee at the opportunity to blog about it, and other Apple products, here at TUAW.

I'm a reformed hardcore PC/Windows/Linux advocate turned Mac fan girl and though my status as a full-time switcher is still pretty new, I have been using the Mac since 1995. I'll admit, I was tentative about the transition at first; I told myself I would never be one of those people who espouses about Apple and the Mac like it is a religion. Cut to 48-hours after I bought my MacBook: I'm on the phone with my mom, plaintively telling her that her next laptop will be a Mac, no ifs ands or buts. I've even had to start biting my tongue, lest the dreaded "well if you had a Mac, it would just work" roll out, when I get a frantic phone call from some friend or relative (ahem, DAD) who somehow broke their networking protocol - and cut off the rest of their house from Wi-Fi, leaving the other computers, printer, and TiVo in a state of confusion.

And my specs, for people that are interested:
Black MacBook 2.16 C2D, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, two external drives, including one set as a Boot Camp/Fusion/Paralells partition that I look forward to reconfiguring on Friday, or as it is known in iCal - "Leopard Day!"

Just catching up after a week away and I've got to say I found this
round of commenting hilarious. I'm mostly referring to Frank
Furter's idiotic posts slating Christina's lack of a link to the
'Bong' sound. Honestly...why would she be reminded of ' that message
{that} stopped appearing on our screens years ago' when hearing the
Mac start-up sound if it wasn't the same sound we have now? It
hasn't changed...the message has gone...you want to hear the sound?
Start your Mac. Don't have a Mac? Then it's all pretty irrelevant.

Honestly, it's incredible how the most arrogant commenters are the
ones who pay no attention whatsoever to the post they're referring to
(e.g. face...).

Anyway, it's a week late but congratulations Christina, I've enjoyed
all your posts so far and look forward to hearing more from you.

my good friend started working at the apple store in south lake, tx this summer and describes the most beautiful moment in his life as the first time he worked the opening shift. apparently all the macs in the store turn on at 7am with a resounding chorus of c chords. beautiful.

welcome aboard!

@ Frank -
1. "VanillaLice" ha ha! Nice one!
2. "Some girls just like to hear themselves type" - some Franks do too.
3. I didn't say a link would be inappropriate, I implied it wasn't necessary.
4. I am not female.
5. In my experience, the biggest tools are usually those who go around calling others "tools".
6. No, the freakin' article was actually centred around Christina announcing herself as the newest TUAW blogger. The sound thing was just a part of her introductory paragraph. Unless you and I are reading different articles, perhaps?

So I take exception to your exception-taking, based as it is on the incorrect notion that this article was about the sound, and that a link was necessary even if it was about the sound, and that you had the right to snidely deride the author even IF a link was necessary and the article was about the sound. Which it wasn't, and it wasn't.

I have the "happy mac" logo on my startup instead of the Apple logo, on my G4 Mini. Not quite the earliest mac logo, which I also had on hand, but still.

I don't know how to do it on the Intel machines, though, sorry. Maybe someone else can post instructions.

@VanillaLice - I take exception to your comment. You, young lady, are a tool. The freakin' article was centered around the SOUND. How much more appropriate would a link ever be?

Some girls just like hearing themselves type.
