24 Hours of Leopard: Quick Look
Feature: Quick LookHow it works: Quick Look has the potential to change the way Mac users interact with their computers. It brings super-quick access to your files by allowing you to preview a variety of files without opening them in their associated applications. Instead of opening a file by double-clicking on it in the Finder, if you hit the spacebar you'll see a live preview pop up. Also with Quick Look, the various supported document icons become live preview thumbnails. Supported file types include "images, text files, PDF documents, movies, Keynote presentations, Mail attachments, and Microsoft Word and Excel files." Third
Who will use it: Everyone. Like Cover Flow, Quick Look has the potential to really speed up the process of finding a particular document since you can scan contents without opening them.

Any word on Quicklook and it's function with adobe CS3 files? Obviously PDFs are supported. What about PSDs, FLAs and INDDs?

I imagine it will be up to Adobe and other third parties to provide plug-ins for their file types. Hopefully, they do. I'd like one for EPS as well.

Ted, Quick Look and Cover flow work just dandy with PSDs.

It'll be interesting to see what Quicksilver makes of these new tools like Quick Look.

These features work hand-in-hand with the handy new icon previews -- icons are rendered to show the contents of the file, from pictures to text. In fact, HTML documents even render the HTML within to show a thumbnail of the webpage! This is a VERY useful feature when looking at a folder filled with web pages.
Oddly, it only works with certain file extensions. For instance, a .jpg file shows the picture in the icon, while a .jpeg does not.

you can also add a quicklook icon in the toolbar if you dont wanna hit spacebar, maybe it's setup by default on new installations, but when I upgraded it wasn't.

Is there some way to reassign the quicklook command to something other than the spacebar? I use the spacebar in the Finder to jump to the first item in list view (and yes, I do this quite frequently in the Finder) and this is, how shall we say...irritating.
I like the feature. I just wish I could modify it a bit. Oh well. I'm sure I'll get used to it (eventually).

Neither QuickLook nor CoverFlow seem to support .docx (Word 2007) documents. It recognises the type, but doesn't display the content.

Add another file format to the list of previews: Font file icons now show a sample of the actual font within!

Is it me, or in all of the preview video demos, I saw the ability to "page through" (left to right, right to left) within the finder as opposed to the "pop-up" with quicklook -- I have not been able to get this feature to work. Has anyone had success?

Like Simon Arch, I can't stand using the spacebar for QuickLook since I already use the space bar to nav to the first file in a Finder window. Why the hell is there no way to change this to use another key in keyboard shortcuts?
I'd love a method to change the key for this. Until I find it, or have a method to disable QuickLook, I'll be using my legal copy of PathFinder. It's just that annoying to have my most used key taken away with no option to remap it.
