Login & Keychain Update 1.0

Leopard users, you have your first OS update waiting for you. The Login & Keychain Update 1.0 fixes a couple of issues with logging in and Keychain (shocking, yes?). According to the Apple documentation it corrects issues with the following, and I quote:
  • Logging in with an account originally created in Mac OS X 10.1 or earlier that has a password of 8 or more characters.
  • Connecting to some 802.11b/g wireless networks.
  • Changing the password of a FileVault-protected account.

Ran this update. System shutdown and did not auto-restart. Once I turned it back on, I got stuck in a "Setup Assistant" loop, even though Leopard had already been successfully installed for a week. A reinstall of the OS got me back into the system, but still not completely stable.

For some reason I had to install this manually. When I did it in Software Update it would try to restart the computer right away, but not actually do anything. It only happened with this download. I ended up downloading it and running the installer. Very odd. Just another bug to tack on to the list I'm experiencing.

How are you supposed to get the software update if you can't get on the internet?

POWERBOOK 15" USERS BEWARE....

Like others, I got a consistent kernel panic after this update. Refused to boot off internal drive. Rebooted into install image, ran Disk Utility and did a Repair. It found nothing. Rebooted to go to my Tiger image, but thought I'd try Leopard one more time. It booted correctly. This was a clean install. Booted fine afterwards, only after this update did the panic issue appear.

I have a PB15" 1.5Ghz (not "HD" version). How did this get out of QA?! They must be using our QA team...

Interestingly, this software update also included a printer driver update for my Brother laser printer which was plugged in, but I hadn't installed the drivers for yet. And no, I unchecked all printer driver installs when doing my clean install of Leopard. I think my SU or my Mac may have gotten smarter.

The "boot cache" notice (it's not an error, guys) has shown up for me a few times that I've noticed. I have a feeling it's something that's always happened, but now it actually tells you, so you don't do a hard shutdown.

Anyone else notice how SU doesn't actually install the SW until you commence Restart?

If you're having Airport issues, try this:

Go to your /System/Library/Extensions folder and delete AppleAirPort2.kext if it's there. Apparently that's a remnant file from Tiger, and not needed.

I had the an Airport issues (#2 and #17) with my 24" iMac and the above fixed it.

YMMV...

Dear Lord, that update was the slowest and most awkward thing ever. It seemed to install quickly, but then shutdown halfway and just kept "working". Finally I get a message about updating boot caches or something, THEN it reboots. It took a good 10 minutes on my MacBook Pro.
