Is this Apple's ultraportable?

Wired's Gadget Lab blog has posted a mockup of the rumored MacBook Air. They based their mockups on what inside sources had to tell them. The big points are that this thing is supposedly very, very thin and lacks both an optical drive and an Ethernet port. I can see omitting networking ports and an optical drive if there is a docking station involved, but I would be hard pressed to buy any computer that didn't have a dedicated networking port.

What say you, does this look like something out of Cupertino or something out of the Macworld addled brain of a Photoshop guru with a little too much time on their hands?

If this was real, I won't know which to fork out for, an iPhone or an Airmac!

I would start seriously considering ditching my mbp and windows server for an imac with added storage and one of these.. i mean all i do is kick around the web for the most part.. and it would rule to not have to worry as much about batter and weight if i want to sit by the pool or go to the coffee shop.

Damn you apple, you and your strong arm credit card rackups!

Would you all stop this MacBook Air nonsense?
Ok, a subnote is something that could be released, but do you really, really think Apple would call it MacBook Air?
Because "There's something in the Air"?

I don't want to offend: But how stupid is this?

Air, Air ... doooohhh ... eeehhh ... must be MacBook ... Air ...! Kewl! Doooo ...

And if they do call it MacBook Air, you can not only call me stupid, but Apple as well. What a bad product name.

I still believe the sentence on the banner hints to improved wireless media access at home and maybe on the go.
And: a sub note would be great.

Bye ...

Maybe the Air (or the Thin, the rumors used to call it) will dock with that slide-in display dock that we saw the patent for?

Besides, if you're only doing lightweight tasks (which would let you use a low power chipset, etc.) like browsing and email and writing and stuff, you don't need GigE or even 802.11N. Don't expect to work on Photoshop files that are hundreds of megs in size, though, without a fast way on or off. Although, you know, if it's got FireWire, you can run IP over FireWire, which would be quite fast.

Air is much more likely than Thin. Most non-english speakers would have a hell of a time trying to pronounce it. Air is definitely more international.

Build this and sell that hollow iMac docking display thing as a complement and I'll buy two of each. :)

No ethernet ports? I guess there would be a solution (docking station, USB extension) and one could go on.

But why would I want an ultraportable laptop? Because I'm always on the move - and don't want to carry around weight. At most a few USB memory sticks.

In that case, making ethernet "external" with docking stations and hubs, isn't going to solve my problem if I have to carry them around.
WiFi is great, but you depend on others making it available - and in Europe I wouldn't want to rely on it in order to get my work done.

For me, it should have Ethernet on board, fast USB ports, extremely good battery life, a 14inch screen and a video-out port.

I can live without all the rest.

Wouldn't the simplest explanation for all this 'air' talk be the addition of 3G to the iphone, even though they've said they would do it, they can still make a big deal out of it can't they? And a laptop without ethernet couldn't be done now, how many companies don't have WiFi because of security, they be shutting out all that segment of the market.

I'm sure they'd still make the MacBook and MacBook Pro models. They wouldn't be shutting out the market, just opening up a new market.

Apple doesn't make its products for enterprise/large business buyers; they are more concerned w/ consumers and small business.

I think we can live with some sort of external ethernet solution. people scoffed when apple dropped the floppy drives back with the first imac, how many computers come with floppy drives now adays? I think for it's purpose this computer will need to give up the ethernet, if it is as thin as it is in the picture. Say goodbye to UMPC, this thing would kill them, with exception of the Asus Eee. I still want my "son of Newton" product though.

After seeing the mockups the Apple "Slice" seems like a more appropriate name.
