MacBook Air

Apple stunned a nation, or at least those who haven't been paying attention to the rumors, today with the unveiling of a very thin new MacBook called the MacBook Air. 'The world's thinnest notebooks' starts at $1799 and comes with a 13.3 inch display (LED), a full keyboard, built-in 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, built-in iSight, and a multitouch trackpad that lets you use gestures to control a number of actions on the MacBook Air. Some other stats include:
- 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache
- 2GB of RAM
- 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive (with optional 64 gig solid state drive
- 1 USB 2.0 port
What it doesn't come with are built-in ethernet ports, FireWire, and optical drive, or enough graphics power to power a 30 inch Display (but you can hook up a 20 or 23 inch display via a built in mini-DVI port).

I think it's suitable and great for most people. Not really many of us need all the things it lacks.
I'm not stupied, I've bought mine only after reading all the reviews and stuff on http://www.maconair.com, I thought carefully, and I'm glad I have it.
It's a good computer! And everyone should just stop arguing and hating. After all, you prevent people of buying a good laptop because of your hate.
For all of those interested in the MacBook Air (or plan to purchase one in the future), there's an online community and message board forming here: MacBook Air Lounge & Forum (http://www.macbooklounge.com/). It looks like it will have a mods & hacks section when the product starts to get tweaked.

Weight is right. Need a light weight primary machine and this isn't it. If round two doesn't solve the major limitations, may have to sell the iMac etc in the office and move everything back to MS machines. And, oh yes, can't put in or attach a spare battery on the road.

Well, not anyone who needs firewire or an optical drive _in their laptop_.
Who does that leave? Anyone who doesn't. Software developers for one. In a laptop, we generally just need something with internet access and a half-decent processor. Personally, if I didn't use a laptop as my primary machine at home, I might buy one of these to carry around when I go to conferences and such. It's almost half the weight of my MBP, and should definitely beat it for battery life. As it is, my MBP is portable enough that I don't need one of these, but maybe if I travelled more...
Like the above guy said, it's cheaper than the Sony. It has more power than the Sony. And they are trying to make it ultra portable by making most everything wireless.
The people that are having a problem with the product are the people like me who NEED a MBP to do graphics work, video, gaming, etc. People that need a MBA need portability, no wires and what not to chug along, etc.
It's a really great idea. And everyone knows that smaller devices cost more at the beginning. For Gods' sake they had Intel make a smaller chip to fit in the damn thing. Of course it's going to cost more. When the technology is more wide spread the prices will drop. Until then if you don't need one, stop complaining about what it doesn't have. Let the people that travel constantly that need something light weight and "ultra-portable" enjoy it.
Personally I have a 17 inch top of the line (at the time I bought it) 1st gen mac book pro and I'm going to ebay it once my air arrives. Yes I already bought it so when you ask "would anyone ever buy this" at least one person would. I'm a student and regular traveler so the difference of a few pounds is a big deal since I walk at least 2 miles in a day at school and way more then that on the road. 3 pounds vs 5 pounds is a big deal esp since thats added to papers, the case and other things. The macbook is a fine computer in some ways but it has very poor performance given its weight (worse then the old 12 inch powerbooks) so fails at being an ultra portable. At the same time it has no graphics card and limited performance options making it an unsuitable desktop replacement.
The air is pretty much designed for people with the means to have the air as their carry around when on the go laptop to compliment a desktop at home (have an intel imac I'll soon trade in for a mac pro to get all the performance I'll ever need). If you're having trouble scrounging up 1700 dollars then yes, its probably not for you but neither are any other ultra portables (the Sony's start at 2k and have half the performance of the air). Personally I'll be thrilled to have a low weight laptop with a 13 inch screen and enough power to do anything I need to do on the go. Sure I'm not going to be processing whole movies in final cut pro on it or compressing giant batches of images or gaming with it, but how often do you do those things on the road anyway? It's plenty fast for touch up work to compliment a home desktop as your main workhorse.
I just moved from LA to Hong Kong. My take is I would never buy this if I was in LA. However I've spent the past week in Hong Kong travelling around carrying my macbook and the 5lbs really starts to strain your shoulders, especially when the ride can be 40 mins with no seats. Macbook air I would've bought if the benchmarks were decently on par with the macbook, however the firewire is a killer for me, I'm an editor, lack of video is a deal breaker.
January 17 2008 at 2:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyseeing as i work at a radio station with a only semi-digital database, my optical drive is pretty important, and i am not carrying one to class every day. plus i've come to enjoy my dual usb imput (i need it to charge my ipod when i'm drawing on my wacom, not to mention the other one i'd need for the optical drive.) apple, i'm sorry. you fail. personally i wouldn't have worried about getting rid of the optical drive since we're pretty much on the verge of disposable monitors (think keyboard about as thick as a macbook that you attach to a page in your 3 ring binder). this is rediculous.
