Our sibling site,
Engadget, is reporting that Apple has apparently applied for trademark protection on a gaming device. The trademark in question would protect the word "APPLE" under the following circumstances: "toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games."
Engadget also reminds us about Apple's recent
patent filing of a touch gaming device. Could this mean that Apple is working on
Pippin 2.0? Time can only tell. However, I wouldn't hold my breath, since Apple often randomly trademarks names and such.

You need a /i. Or . Or something. You've italicized the whole page!
I doubt Apple will actually release a gaming-centric device. I just can't see it.

they're just renewing their right to stamp "apple" on anything with a screen. must be a slow news day.

If I were Apple, here's something I'd do right away. Enable Apple TV to play Flash games. Then, give online game developers a simple code to embed that would allow their existing games to be found & played. Instant game platform, with a minimum of investment. Apple would build an interface categorizing games & allowing them to be neatly displayed (cover flow images and other views), searched and found.
Games written just for the platform, and ports from other platforms, would come later. The important thing is to establish Apple's immediate ownership of the home TV, where TiVo has a head start.
Apple would also do well to study the Wii controller, adapt its strengths, and improve on it.
Here's hoping they get this right. PLEASE don't bring up the Pippin (shudder). I can practically smell the ghost of Gil Amelio.

My guess would be games for the Apple TV. Although Intel and Apple's partnership could potentially spank the 360 and PS3 with their IBM based architecture. It all just seems implausible, unless it would be like I said, Apple TV based.

My guess would be Apple are already selling a hand-held device capable of playing games (They invented the frigging iPod. Have you heard of it?), and they are doing some routine brand-maintenance to ensure their trademark covers it.

I believe it will be a PSP competitor.... a handheld

i dont really think anyone plans on competing with the PSP. it's got its own little niche market and it's not exactly eating up sales of any other devices. it's got some great features, dont get me wrong. but it's essentially dead in the water. at least in the US.

I dunno. Apple has a habit of updating their ipod or computers every 6 months and making a new device every 2 years. I don't think it will work well in the video game industry. and knowing apple, the 1st game system will be a crummy 20gb hd with wifi only and blah blah blah. then 6 months later 80 or 120gb with with a better graphics card for 700... lame.

I've come to the conclusion that this probably doesn't mean that Apple is going to do anything game related rather it's to prevent someone else from doing it. They are covering themselves with these patents.

Apple? Games?
You can expect that when somebody comes up with a touchscreen phone!
oh wait.

It's a patent to cover games on the iPhone & iPod touch. Apps & games to a lesser extent are going to be a pretty hot thing for both of those and future touch enabled ipods.

Along with most people here, I seriously doubt that apple has set out to become a competitor in either the handheld or the stationary game-console industry. What is more likely is that the iphone will be developed further in order for games similar to "brain training" and nintendo ds games to be run. That's just speculation though...

It's probably easiest and safest based on the amount of rumors that are constantly swirling around Apple that this is actually nothing significant.
