Engadget tries to fry an egg on Penryn MacBook Pro
OK, they didn't really try to fry an egg. But for those of us using those first searing-heat MBP's, you'll be happy to know the Penryn MacBook Pro's are a little cooler (temperature-wise anyway). On average, about 10° F cooler, and the fans run slower and quieter. Sorry if this kills any MacGuyver-esque plans of using Penryn laptops as emergency griddles. For a much more detailed analysis of the Penryn advantages, check out the Engadget post, complete with Xbench tests and a flavorful grid with all the analysis.

Damn, guess I wont be making Fajitas on my Penryn MBP anytime soon.

Nice! Great job taking a bad joke from the article, changing the food of choice, and then presenting it again for us. Certainly funnier with Fajitas instead of eggs. No, seriously.

Good to see we both have great self-depricating senses of humor. Respect to you.

*sigh* and here they got my hopes up. I saw the engadget article yesterday and thought, oh, goody. When I saw this post I thought maybe it was something new not just shameless cross-posting.

TUAW doesn't have an extensive review like Engadget does up. God forbid they let their readers know that the general gadget blog did this while they haven't yet.
Besides, you really read "Engadget tries..." and thought to yourself "Hey! Something new on TUAW!"?

My Santa Rosa MBP doesn't get very hot...fans are almost completely silent while the CPU is idling (2000rpm). So I don't know why people keep screaming "zomg its so hot! ill get a burn and sue apple!!!!"

Has anyone ever tired to fry an egg? That would be awesome.

I have no idea what they are talking about. I have a MacBook Pro 2.6 from november, non penryn and it never gets that hot even running photoshop, streaming video, music, and working in multiple documents. This needs to be revisited.

I have a 2.6 GHz that I ordered just before the Penryns were announced, and a 1.8 GHz that I ordered the day the first MacBook Pros were announced in 2006.
The 1.8 GHz gets uncomfortably hot. Especially above the function keys.
One obvious difference is that the original MBP had lots of short, narrow vertical ventilation slits near the hinge. Newer MBPs (for at least a year) have a smaller number of fatter, longer horizontal slits. The newer design looks like it probably provides more airflow.

Heh. I have a first-gen MacBook Pro and it gets ridiculously hot - it's terrible when I'm running PPC Creative Suite, but bad anyway. First Mac I've ever "bought" (fortunately, it's work's, not mine) that I seriously regret. (My G5 tower, OTOH, is a beauty.)

I've got a brand new Penryn MBP here (that I managed to snag on Tuesday from a relatively unknown Apple store that for some reason had a load of them) and I can say that if it wasn't for the fact that people complain about heat from the old ones, I'd never even think about the heat of this computer. It's been rendering video in my lap all day, and it's just fine.

do you think apple would be willing to switch out my MBP's old processer with a peryn for a price?

They'll do it for $1999. :D
Of course it will seem like less when you sell your old George Forman grill.
