Sure, the MacBook Air is a niche product, but it seems to be a darned popular niche product. The folks who are most interested in the MacBook Air are the kind that obsessively track the availability of their latest gadget crush, and now Apple has made that much easier for those jonesing for a little MacBook Air action.
Just load up the MacBook Air Availability page and find out if there are any in an Apple Store near you. As you can see above, my local Apple Store in Ardmore has some MacBook Airs in stock (sadly, the webpage doesn't list how many MacBooks are available, though it does point out that they are available on a first come, first served basis).
You might recall that Apple posted a similar page to track the availability of the iPhone.

Oooh! No need to call my Apple 50 times a day any more!
Does anyone know who won the MacBook Air poster?

It doesn't look like the Apple page is working. It lists the availability for Monday, rather than Tuesday. I checked the Kentucky store and it says it is available, then if you click on Oxmoor link, it says in the top right corner that it is unavailable. So Apple, which is it?

they should just have this tool available for everything they offer at the store, seeing as how most people have a half hour commute between them and their "local" store.

Just a heads up for Chicagoans... now that our sales tax at the register is 10.25% after Friday's hike, you really, really want to not use the Apple Store (or any other vendor with a "presence" in the city) for high-ticket items, either online or B&M. That $1800 MacBook Air's worth $184 of your money to the city; you can get it overnighted from any online vendor and still come out ahead.

I note that, unlike their first attempt at this during the iPhone launch, they've made the little dots in different shapes to accommodate those of us who have a red/green vision deficiency. Thanks!
