A couple of years ago, Trent Reznor released fully editable GarageBand versions of a few Nine Inch Nails songs. Others have followed suit (like Burger King), and now Radiohead joins their number. They've made all five tracks (or "stems") of the song "Nude" available in iTunes for $0.99 each [iTunes link]. The tracks are in DRM-free iTunes Plus format, so you can pretty much manipulate them however you'd like.
Purchase all five before the end of this week and receive an access code for the full GarageBand file. Once you've finished your remix, you can upload it here. It definitely sounds like fun, especially for Radiohead fans (like me).

Great idea, Kristin Hersh has also been doing this for a while

Anything that gets us away from the old, broken, greed-based business model the recording industry tries to keep us tied to, can only be a good thing.

I think it's a cool idea. And good to see that others here feel the same about it. Another discussion on that topic on a different Mac-site was more filled with arguments like "$5 for a song is too much" and how apple is (greedingly) conspiring with radiohead to rip off customers.
Sure NIN and others have done this at no extra costs. That's cool and all, but in the end it's still and artist's work. And such work deserves to be appreciated.
Bottom-line: Great idea, and I'm always willing to pay for great ideas and such an extra value (imagine the HOURS you can have fun with it).

This contest is a joke, seriously ! "Buy bits of our music, remix it and maybe we will listen to it, you won't win anything, even the ownership of your track." What's this ??
Not only the remix thing is not innovative, but there's no point to participate to it. I have a deep respect for Radiohead but this is only disappointing, when one knows how creative they can be regarding their music and their commercial strategies.

So, they are asking me to pay 5 bucks for a song that I can edit? That's a fantastic idea and all, but that's just too expensive for one song. This is a great sign of things to come, though.

Wow - I use to like Radiohead but every since the whole "forget the major labels,we'll sale it directly to the fans, oh wait, i'm only going to give you crappy mp3s of that album and then im going to go back to the majors and make you buy the full quality version through the major labels."
And now that their totally ripping off NIN, my respect is at its lowest point since the lead singer had blonde hair.
Not only do they want you to do the work of a remixer (who gets paid for this) - their actually going to sale you the privilege?

This sucks. NIN makes several multitrack versions of their songs available for free on remix.nin.com (and you will find more on the Year Zero remix album and Ghosts I-IV). They are also available in multiple formats: Garageband, Ableton Live, and raw WAV files.

I am a *huge* Radiohead fan, but come on, making us pay for the different audio files? Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I think this is great... why so much bitterness from the comments? I would liken this to a company releasing software into open source... amateur producers like me serve to learn a lot from opportunities like this.

As much as i LOVE and respect radiohead... and trust me i am a long time fan... they have had many great ideas... this one is amazing, although a bit pricey... $10 in England (£4.74) and only like $5 in the states... i know i should be blaming iTunes and their frankly outragous pricing differences... but can someone upload a torrent or sumthing of this...?
Please don't hate me...

I bought them all and I didn't get the E-Mail with the garageband file. Infact, I didn't get an E-Mail at all!

I didn't get an email, either. What's more, I appear to have accidentally deleted all the $#@! tracks. Oh, well.
