JPMorgan: MacBook Sales Up, PC Sales Down
According to a recent posting on Phillip Elmer-DeWitt's Apple 2.0 column over at CNN, JPMorgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has issued a "cautiously optimistic" report on Apple based primarily on "stronger-than-expected" MacBook sales" for the quarter ending in March. According to Moskowitz, computer sales usually fall-off after Christmas, but Apple has actually had a sales increase -- albeit a small one at only 0.2%. However, that increase is still better than sales for other PC's, which according to the report, fell 9% in the same quarter. In spite of the sales increase, there still may be other issues that have an effect on Apple's bottom line this year. According to Moskowicz, there may be some difficulty for Apple if the company is not able to deliver a 3G iPhone by Summer.
"As long as there is nothing to suggest that a summer launch of the 3G phone is not a possibility, we would expect investors to look past any near-term disappointment in iPhones," said Moskowitz in his report. The report doesn't specify which MacBook model is responsible for the slight increase in sales for Apple. But with the MacBook Air having just been released during the last quarter, perhaps it deserves the credit?
Apple will release its quarterly earnings report on April 23rd.

I bought my first Mac last month... a minimally configured Macbook. I wonder how much of a dent I made.

That's pretty easy to understand I mean the automakers come out with some new flashy sports car and it attracts a few potential buyers and loads of capable ones. But the key is "capable", yeah they can afford it easily but the real life concerns kick in such as needs of the spouse and family and practicality, so they may buy the minivan, hybrid or whatever. The Pee Cee manufactures need to invest more in design and innovation to attract new and potential buyers of their products. That's unfortunately a widely known fact especially when you throw in it won't run OS X legally anyways. LOL

I just 'had' to go out and get a 2 year old 12" Powerbook, I find the Air lacking in real-life.
Now, where's Apple's Professional sub-notebook these days? Oh and are we going by Mossberg's 'within the next 60 days' still? a Special Event intro-ing new iPhones + launch of App Store. I'm pretty sick of glitchy GPRS, and wi-fi networks are not abundant enough in Edinburgh. I'll give 3G a go!

I'm happy to say that I'm one of the people who contributed to this. I bought a MacBook last month, to replace my slightly over-the-hill HP laptop. Couldn't be happier to have finally made the switch.

I had a 12" Powerbook. Loved it, awesome machine.
For me though, i'm getting better battery life from the air, a backlit keyboard (i missed that on the 12"er) and it's way more portable. Sure, it's width and depth is a bit bigger, but way lighter and it has that same " i can just pick it up with one hand and chuck it in my bag " portability that the 12" had. No internal optical doesn't matter to me now like I thought it would. I just use a usb flash drive from time to time. WAY brighter screen, but most significantly, it's MEGA FAST compared to the 1.5ghz 12" i had.
I loved the 12", but in GeekBench this air gets 2200, compared to 800 for my 1.6 GHZ G5, which is much faster than the 1.5ghz G4 powerbook I had. More importantly, it's snappier in real world use.
But I still miss my PB G4, I regret having to sell it, but I got good money for it so I had to.
