the fix for dvi, not detecting displays, not sleeping and brightness controls
Sometimes after updates osx doesn't reload the extensions cache
here's how to fix that
go to the terminal in finder/applications/utilities
type
sudo su
then your password
rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
shutdown -h now
then you'll be prompted saying cache needs updated before restart, click, the computer will shutdown in a few seconds and then you can restart
Btw this update fixes the issues with Starcraft and Diablo 2, both now work again.
Are you sure ? On what kind of machine are you running these games?
November 17 2008 at 12:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have two iMacs;
a 24" 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and
a 20" Intel Core Duo.
Both Rebooted twice, the second reboot taking place midway the first. Everything is working super fine and I see improvements throughout.
One obvious fix that was really a thorn in my side has to do with the fix bought on by the:
"Includes extensive graphics enhancements."
On my 3.06 with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS video card and 4GB of Ram, I should expect nothing less than spectacular graphics.
Well, whenever I would come out of a 'Sleep Display' state ( not a general machine sleep state), the desktop would flicker for a moment just before going full brightness. Was really irking me after paying $2200 for this machine. Did it from moment one and I thought, gosh.....My early 2006 iMac Core Duo doesn't do that!!!
After the update to 10.5.5, the flicker is gone. Instant full brightness comes on, when I move my mouse to turn on the display from a 'Sleep Display' state. Thank you !!
Also,
Apps are starting much quicker, the iMac boots up quicker and generally everything is better.
My DVI port is not working anymore after downloading the update. It's a DVI to VGA and I've tried different monitors, so while it recognizes the monitors connected it does not show a display on the monitor. It looks like the monitor does not recognize the Macbook Pro even though the MBP recognizes it.

No problems whatsoever. iCal works, Safari is just as speedy as ever, all the icons in the Dock launch their applications just fine.
No flicker on the 20" Apple Cinema (CRT) display (at 1600 X 1200) before the update, none now.
iTunes 8 & CoverSutra working as before, I.E., perfectly. Wireless connection stayed up without a hitch.
Heck, even my 22 year old Apple Extended Keyboard/Griffin iMate interface combo still works.
amazing. 1 year and 5 major updates, and 10.5.5 still FORGETS custom views in folders. This is border line retarded. COME ON!
Also, safari turned unusable.. i have a 2.4 core 2 duo with 4gb RAM and it is SLOW. PAINFULLY SLOW.
Have deleted caches, repaired permissions, checked the file system and it sucks.
X11 xterms now have beeps when backspacing a blank line and autocompletion tabs produces multiple results.

September 16 2008 at 10:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOh, I should add that I didn't go through Software Update and I used the Combo even though I was coming from 10.5.4. I think that's should be standard practice by now.
September 16 2008 at 10:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy does this always happen to me?
My Time Machine drive, which backed up just fine yesterday, no longer mounts. It seems to be dead. Wouldn't be the first time, they already replaced it once.
Luckily, I booted back into 10.5.5 and was able to back up to my other drive. So though I won't be able to restore I can at least be sure my files are safe.
But I might not have to -- ever since this latest boot things have been working fine.
Odd.
Not having any of those problems! But I am seeing weirdness when composing html messages now in entourage 2008....
