MacBook/Pro trackpad fix coming soon

Several people who own the new, unibody MacBooks and MacBook Pros are reporting trouble with the glass trackpads. Specifically, it's been failing to register clicks, seemingly at random. One user even told PC Pro, "I don't even attempt to use this machine unless I'm at a desk using a mouse."

One user sent a complaint to Steve Jobs via email, and (reportedly) received the brief reply,
"Software fix coming soon." We couldn't confirm that Steve himself actually sent this message, but he has responded to user emails in the past.

Personally, I've only used a new MacBook for a few hours and didn't experience any issues. We'll let you know as soon as this update becomes available.

I'm beginning to wonder if this track pad is some designer's revenge on Mac users - a plant by Microsoft to ruin our day. This is a nightmare on a computer that is supposed to ease the productivity issues and make our work loads flow quicker and easier. I'm thinking about returning this thing. Plus, can anyone tell what their photos really look like on this mirror? This computer feels more like a graphic nightmare!

PS: By "Pinch" I meant the zoom, not the open and close feature

I changed my MB white for the unibody MB; everything was great until I tried using NeoOffice and iWork apps - the trackpad is frustrating. The thing is BIG and I can't use it comfortably without accidentally touching it with more than 1 finger. Result - whatever I am working on screams into "pinch" and grows or shrinks. And there is no way to switch it off or even reset to 100% view. The trackpad options in System Preferences imply you can either set it to require you hold the CMND key or that the CMND key will operate as an on-off toggle, but no. I haven't had any intense Photshop sessions yet, but going by what has been posted - not looking forward to it.

BTW, no problems with click registering - push it in the middle and it works every time. And scroll and rotate work just fine.

An interesting observation. I live in Colorado (dry climate, 6500 feet elevation). The MBP trackpad is almost unusable. After 24 hours with the first one, I returned it, and got a replacement. The second one is better, but still pretty bad. However.... this past week I was in San Francisco, and DC. In San Francisco, my problems did not go away entirely, but I just didn't recognize the problems as much. Then I went to DC, and the pad worked very well. The cursor moved like it was supposed to, and 90% of my clicks worked (rather than 20% in colorado). Now, this morning I am back in Colorado, and back to a bad trackpad. Am wondering how much either altitude or humidity has to do with the trackpad issues.

Lately my early 2008 MBP has been experiencing the same problem...I have to go to system settings, disable clicks, re-enable and then it works fine for a couple more days.

Thank gawd. I just plunked down $2,300 for a replacement MacBook Pro just today and this trackpad is NOT working. There's a 5 second delay or 10 taps of the thumb before I can get a response.

I've been on "PowerBooks" since my 1991 PowerBook 140 so I know of which I speak. I couldn't afford this replacement right now but the Windoze POS was working my last nerve so I scrounged every credit card in my possession to get back In Black.

Please, fix this soon!

Yeah, my brand new $2,300 trackpad is working about 30% of the time or less. Loving this.....

The only problem I've had is with the "tap to click." Other than that no worries.

Been having it lately. I use iChat a lot and Serato about 4 times a week and I've been having it happen a lot.

Even had issues with the caps lock key (which I use a lot for Serato). Also had issues where the pointer would move around when I am two finger scrolling. During scrolling I've caught myself moving the mouse out of the way more than a handful of times.

Can't wait for the fix. Other than that, I am loving the new Macbook like crazy.
