MobileMe updates alongside 10.5.6

Alongside the OS update to 10.5.6 released today, Mobile Me has also undergone a service update.

The Mobile Me improvements includes the following:
  • Contacts, calendars and bookmarks sync automatically within a minute of the changes being made on a computer, another device or at www.me.com.
  • Resolved issues causing contacts to temporarily disappear on the iPhone and iPod Touch, along with inconsistent data.
  • Improved startup time and reliability
A complete list of changes can be found at the update's support page. You must upgrade Leopard to 10.5.6 and your iPhone to 2.2 before taking advantage of some of the fixes.

Thanks for the tip, Jonathan!

MobileMe is still a piece of crap for me. Calendar sync is not working at all via the "cloud." SKDJ$%*(@#)*$@(#)WFJEK

It is a shame to not see https, but I'm glad to see the steady updates on MobileMe. A big change from the pace of updates and fixes on dotmac.

Everything is sent clear text - run wireshark and you can see what is in the packets going back and forth... e-mail, contacts, calendars.

"Improved startup time and reliability"

How does that one work, Apple's servers boot faster? Or do they mean that it takes less time to set up the connection itself? Or does your iPhone boot faster now that MobileMe is spiffier?

I can honestly state that my iDisk has not become any faster either (which is no surprise seeing I need to connect all the way to Apple's servers in the US instead of a European mirror) and reliability is such a vague term I won't even go into it...

i only have my iphone 3g hooked up to mobile me online, but my contacts and calendar won't sync or havent in a few weeks. i have 497 contacts in my phone but only 434 online. if i make changes online they dont show up on my phone (i.e. i create contact called "TEST" and it never showed up on my phone; and likewise with the calendar). if i create something on my phone it doesnt show up online, obviously.

anyone else having this problem? my iphone is most up to date, and im afraid of losing the data on my phone if it syncs wrong?

any solutions?

The initial log in is SSL beyond that, SSL is not needed and would slow down the application.

"The only real web pages MobileMe exchanges with the server are the HTML, JavaScript, and CSS files that make up the application, which have no need for SSL encryption following the initial user authentication" AppleInsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/08/15/inside_mobileme_web_3_and_web_client_server_apps.html&page=2)

Not true. Web pages that aren't encrypted are sent in the clear and so ALL of the data displayed to you on the web page and data you send (i.e., e-mails you write at me.com (or gmail for matter, though gmail has the ability to use https)) are visible. If you're doing stuff at a public access point, it's trivial to packet sniff the network and piece together everything you do online (http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/01/04/04pogue-email/).
