Troubleshooting Roundup: Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update
While Jason D. O'Grady considers anything more than ordinatrix inflagrante to be success when he's installing a new operating system, he and others are still reporting on the various and sundry issues that have cropped up since Tuesday's 10.5.7 update:
-
I can't find my brain: Some users are reporting that their Buffalo (among other) external disks aren't mounting after installing the update. Solution: Nothing concrete, though many people are suggesting installing the combo update you can download from Apple's site, rather than using Software Update. You can participate in Apple's Support Discussion on the topic if you share this problem. [via MacNN.]
-
Blue screen of death: No joke: since the update restarts your computer up to three times, some users are getting hung up on the first blue screen that appears after the gray Apple logo screen. Solution: Wait until disk activity stops, then shut down the computer hard by holding down the power button. [via PowerPage.]
-
I was blind, but now I see: The update is causing some video cards to output non-native display resolutions. Instead of outputting 1920 x 1200, instead Mac OS X will try and output 1920 x 1080 (which works fine for HDMI, but not many widescreen displays). Solution: An oldie-but-goodie: Zap the PRAM by holding down command + option + P + R at startup until the computer restarts a few times, then letting go. [also via PowerPage.]
-
Cold fusion: VMWare is suggesting people hold off on updating if their configuration includes an ATI graphics card and they use Fusion to run 3D Windows apps. (2D apps are just fine.) Slow and poor rendering and general crashiness are symptoms of the problem. Solution: None yet. Apple and ATI are working on an update. [via MacNN.]

After installing the update, my internet sharing connection with my Xbox 360 no longer works over ethernet. I've reset the router and checked to make sure all of my IP and DNS settings are correct. Connection test on the Xbox says its connected to the network but can't find the internet. This was running smoothly with no problems whatsoever until the moment I downloaded the OS X software update. Any ideas?

That's odd, it still works fine for me under 10.5.7.

I had trouble keeping my MacBook Pro connected to my wireless network after the update. When left idle the wireless connection would disconnect after 5-7 minutes. No problem reconnecting after this happened and the computer was not going to sleep. Apple had me delete all of my preferred wireless networks and then re-add mine which didn't solve the problem. We then reset and reconfigured my Airport Extreme and Airport Express (which I use as a range extender.) This also did not fix the problem. We then reset the Express one more time and again configured it as a range extender. Everything seems to be working the way it should after this last rest of the Express. My PS3 and iPhone were not dropping the wireless connection, just the MacBook Pro which had never done this prior to the update.

Some issues with bluetooth keyboards and mice staying connected. I have an Apple wireless keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse and randomly they'll just stop working. The "connection lost" message doesn't pop up, so it involves disabling and re-enabling bluetooth.
And I'm not the only one having this issue:

Same here...Bluetooth worked like a charm until I updated my Macbook to 10.5.7...I'm trying the combo update to see if that fixes it!!

Does anyone know what the "Translator" process is or why it is now running at 100% CPU? I haven't found much information on it, but I think it may be related to Mobile Me syncing (I turned MM sync off and restarted and the process hasn't returned).

I reinstalled the update using the combo package (following RK's advice, below) and the problem hasn't returned (yet). I think I will install all future updates by this method. Thanks RK.

Printing doesn't work anymore with Photoshop CS4, just after the update. Printer: Samsung CLP-350N.

Time machine just keeps on preparing backup and never actually finishes. I've had to turn it off a couple times because it never stops.

When you do a major update like 10.5.7 or make enough changes to your system time machine does a deep transversal (it rescans all your subdirectories to make sure nothing else has changes, I think) but anyway it can take a good 10 - 20 mins or even longer in some cases. I would hook up to your fastest connection and just let it finish.
JD said 2:34PM on 5-15-2009
Yes, I expected it, but 12 hours?
Frank said 12:28PM on 5-16-2009
JD, are you saying that Time Machine doesn't, at some point, eventually start showing that it's backing up X of Y GB? Does it just keep saying that it's preparing after 12 hours?? If that's the case, then yeah, that's slow (especially if you have a fast connection).
But from past experience, OS X updates tend to cause Time Machine to take well over 1/2 hour on my 1st gen MBP to just get to the point where it shows that it's actually starting to backup, and then I typically let it run overnight as such updates tickle so many darn files that TM goes apesh*t on the backup.
Not sure how big your HD is, but as a reference, on my MBP with its 100GB 7200RPM drive, connected via Gigabit ethernet directly to a Time Capsule, 8 hours was not unreasonable. If, for example, you have an iMac with a 320GB HD doing backups to a locally connected USB2 (400Mbps) external HD, yeah, I could see 12+ hours easily.
JD said 10:30PM on 5-16-2009
Actually, it prepares for several hours and then goes incredibly slowly, and the last time I let it go for 12 hours it said "56K of 1.0GB" backed up. I had to stop it because I was going on a trip. I tried downloading and reinstalling the upgrade and will try again with Time Machine next week when I get back home.

My fax isn't working either.
If I want to send I have to boot off and external drive that still has a backup of my hard drive on 10.5.6. But now I can't update my backup drive, or else I wouldn't be able to fax at all.

Has anyone else noticed Pages not being able to open a blank document?

I am able to open Pages, but Numbers won't open. Both programs are failing when I try to print.
Also have the identical problem with Word and Excel, respectively.

Has anyone else noticed a strange burning sensation after downloading the update?

Yes, and I have hives too. Also, my iPhone Slingplayer app doesn't have 3G support and the economy is in the tank. Could all of these things be related? ;-)
