Alleged Snow Leopard screenshots and video
Mac Magazine has posted (English translation) what they're claiming to be several screenshots and videos of Snow Leopard, the forthcoming major update to OS X. Some of the goodies on display include a slider that allows you to adjust the size of icons in a Finder window (much like iPhoto does), new Stacks behavior and a peek at Quicktime X, which has a black border in this build.
In the video above, we see some cool smart quotes, smart dashes, smart dates (add to iCal; view date in iCal) and auto-correction of spelling errors.
We first saw screenshots last year, and Apple issued a code freeze on the APIs last week. I, for one, am looking forward to this tidied up version of Leopard.

I really like the slider feature to resize the icons, but if that video is from 10A261, that's pretty dated at this point.

"auto-correction of spelling erros"
Looks like a feature you're looking forward to! ;)

Not necessarily the most exciting features...

Definitely not wow'd by any of this. Seems like features MS Word has had for a while? I'm new to the Apple game, so I could be missing something.

The big deal is that it's built into the OS: every application can use the same core services. This means that any program can now use these features. It also means you can have a shared dictionary across all of your software.

Word has had it for a while, but this is the Mac equivalent of Notepad, not Word. In Windows, Notepad can't even show the smart quotes because they're still using the old 8-bit encodings.

Gotcha. Makes sense. OS-Level "Smart Tags" er... "Smart Quotes" :)

Expect to see smart quotes in web page comments (like this one) from Mac users after Snow Leopard ships. Kind of like how Mac users are less likely to have misspellings in their comments because web browsers already get spell checking for free from the OS.

I've been using Snow Leopard as my main OS for the past 2 weeks now, its very stable and 90% of my programs seem to work just fine or better than they did before.

You must have an old version... they'll fix that (stability and program support) before it's released! There's got to be some small thing needing attention in every third party app... it'd be Un-Apple.

so can you comment anything on the new bootcamp with HFS+ Drivers? Could you at least say if your build has this feature?
misecia said 6:01PM on 5-18-2009
I have the very latest beta of the OS.
I haven't tried installing Windows yet, so i can't comment on the HFS+ at present.

Wait a second, were Substitutions always in 10.5? After watching this video I opened TextEdit and I have Smart Copy/Paste, Smart Quotes, and Smart Links available. Also in iChat, and I'm sure other apps, but not Mail.
