White MacBook specs quietly bumped
Apple released a stealth upgrade of the entry-level MacBook this morning. The white MacBook, still priced at $999USD, now has a 160GB hard drive, a 2.13GHz processor and a slight increase in RAM speed -- 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM. The previous version, released back in January, had a 2.0GHz processor with a 120GB hard drive and 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Other features on the revised MacBook remain the same, including the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card that we wrote about a few months ago.
Thanks to all those who tipped us about this!

And I have a hunch that this is because Snow Leopard is VERY close and MacBooks in their testings needed that extra boost. The Hard Drive upgrade aslo suggests that Bootcamp will a big part of Snow Leopard.
Just my opinion ^_^
This is just a crazy idea, but...
What if Apple is just going through their leftover inventory? The white macbook can be used to sell the lower speed processors they have left over and the white notebook shells they have to keep producing for repair purposes. Better than letting them go to waste. Or perhaps Apple was able to get a whole bunch of these processors at a discount, for some reason. Or maybe they started running low on 2.0 GHz processors. Could be any number of reasons. Just some thoughts.
Wait a minute... You can max the RAM out at 4GB? I have the 2008 black plastic model (March-April or so...) with 2GB of RAM, which was supposed to be the max. Have they upgraded the logic board as well...or did they cleverly not tell anybody that it could support 4GB? I'd love to have more RAM than 2 gigs if it's possible with the machine I have, but I've been told it can't handle more.

Rather than have the current line of White Macbook, Unibody Macbook, Unibody Macbook pro, We are going to see the Macbook (white plastic) and the Macbook Pro (all unibodies)
Apple know that the White Macbook is a high seller. It's cheap (relatively speaking) and it's capable. It is there perfect student machine.
I think they are going to keep it around. Give it is own distinction, and separate the unibodies as the pro-line.
This seem to be a crazy marketing decision by Apple - "Lets make our bottom of the line notebook a better buy than the more expensive ones. That will generate revenue!"
Obviously, Apple has plans for a Unibody bump in the near future. Maybe the rumors of incorporating all the Unibodies into the PRO line have some basis. Only a few more weeks until WWDC.

There is also an option to upgrade the hard drive to 500gb for $180. That option is not available on any other notebook that Apple makes. This white macbook is looking better and better.
May 27 2009 at 2:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo... This thing is now faster than the unibody MacBook? That makes sense...
What also makes sense: this is the white MacBook's second bump since the last batch of updates. Definitely not the system to get if you always need to have the latest...
Having firewire on the white MacBook is a nice plus, but I think everything else about it really lags when comparing the 13"unibody. The white plastic shell is extremely prone to scratching and the inside white plastic for the palm rests and screen frame pick up dirt and stain really easily.
Also the unibody frame feels rock solid in comparison. Sturdy enough to throw down the stairs kinda tough. Just make sure it's in sleep mode ;)
My two cents.
I literally just bought a unibody macbook yesterday. Will Apple still honor the free ipod deal?
May 27 2009 at 10:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt looks like you have to have purchased them at the same time. Still, it can't hurt to contact Apple and ask.
May 27 2009 at 1:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApple have a 14 day returns policy, just return it under that. And then buy it right back (with iPod)!
May 27 2009 at 5:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't understand why they are doing this. When I bought my MacBook in Feb., the only hard-sell I got at the Apple store was the 2.0ghz unibody. It was like the white one wasn't worth it, even with the same specifications and being $300 less. I figured they were focusing on the new iteration and phasing out the other model. I guess keeping a notebook that's under the $1K price point is still appealing to the market.
