Is the Mac OS X 10.5.7 update causing you grief?

Against my better judgment, I always download and install Mac OS X updates immediately. That has never caused an issue with any of my Macs until now. Since I installed 10.5.7 literally minutes after hearing about its release, I have been experiencing sporadic issues with USB on my first-generation Intel iMac.

A look through the Apple Support discussion forums showed that this isn't an isolated issue. A number of people have reported losing connectivity to USB hard disks and peripherals. What's rather discouraging to see, however, is that USB issues aren't the only problem that 10.5.7 hath wrought. Other frustrations reported in the forums include:
  • Loss of connectivity to Bluetooth peripherals including keyboards, mice, and phones
  • Monitor resolution issues (former resolution settings missing, colors "off", screen redraw oddities)
  • Mac crashing as it goes to sleep, having problems waking from sleep
  • No sound, or sound quality is bad
  • Intermittent problems with WiFi connectivity
  • Spontaneous shutdowns
  • Older MacBook Pros overheating
The list goes on and on... Some forum regulars report that the problems go away after downloading and installing the 10.5.7 Combo Updater (available at http://support.apple.com/downloads/), while others are still experiencing frustrating crashes even after attempting this fix.

TUAW wants to hear from readers who have experienced issues of any sort since updating a Mac to 10.5.7. If you have, what kind of problems are you seeing? What, if any, fixes have worked for you?

Against my better judgment, I always download and install Mac OS X updates immediately. That has never caused an issue with any of my Macs...

I'm a newly converted MAC user and didn't realize that 10.5.7 could be the problem to my issues.

I bought my MAC late '08 and some time after it updated I noticed that my USB connections would just stop working. It's bad enough only having 3 connectors, but when 2 of the 3 just stop working for no reason, then I wonder if I made a bad choice going to MAC.

On occasion, but rarely, it won't wake up and I have to do a hard restart.

So what would be the answer to the USB problem?

I'm having all sorts of issues with USB under 10.5.7 in a MacPro early 2008 model. External hard drives are not recognized under USB connections, pendrives are not shown in the desktop, scanner is not working, problems with keyboard and mouse, etc. No matter how I plug them onto the computer. I installed the Combo update but not luck. Unfortunattley I can't find the installer disks so I can't go back to 10.5.6 either. So far I have a $4,000 machine that's not recognizing even the keyboard sometimes.
Stay away from 10.5.7, at least if you have a MacPro.
I hope the problem gets resolved somehow in 10.5.8, although my experience with past updates is that if you start with a new problem, new updates wont fix it. (that's why I never upgrade past 10.4.9 in my old iMac)

I thought I was going nuts (or at least my macbook was). My first gen aluminum macbook won't connect to any smb or afp shares. nfs works fine. About a week ago, this macbook mysteriously froze and I figured it was resultant disk corruption, but a completely clean reinstall has failed to resolve the issue. It has been very frustrating, having to move everything onto an nfs share on a linux box and then remote desktop to the other machine and copy from the nfs share, or remote desktop and mount this machine, as that seems to work fine on the mac mini and macbook pro first gen.

Both my macbook pro (1.83 core duo) and my colleagues macbook pro (2.16 core duo) have experienced the repetitive freezing. Safari seems to be a big culprit in the problems, I thought maybe flash was causing a problem, but sure enough my machine locked up when I was working in FCP. Thank you Apple, now im back to my G5 iMac until I can make my laptop run well again. My PC friend reveled in the day that I had a problem, please come back reliable mac!

Had similar issues with my Macbook Pro ( Dec '97) between bluetooth ( i.e. mouse) going up and down like a yoyo and not being able to revive the Mac from sleep.

Have reinstalled 10.5.7 and did a PRAM reset in the hopes there will be some improvement.
Not sure what else I can do if the sleep condition continues.
Applications appear stable so far.

Definite issues. Bluetooth drops out now and then, and the mouse movement is randomly jerking with a wireless or wired mouse. The bluetooth issue happened before the 10.5.7 update but the jumpy cursor issue is new (and annoying).

I am having terrible trouble waking my computer up from sleep. I thought there was something wrong with the hardware and had started to think of sending it back as faulty. Then this afternoon I woke it up (having had to switch it off from the mains and re-start it) and when I tried to pick up my mail I discovered that the settings had gone and it was acting as if this was the first time I had opened the mail program. It put all my folders inside other new folders it created and named "Delivered" and then it proceeded to bring in nearly 1000 messages from the past God-knows-how-long they had been on the server. The whole thing is a terrible mess now. I don't know which are duplicates, which ones I threw out, where I filed some of them. It will take me hours of work to sort it all out and I honestly don't have the heart for it. On the other hand, all the Rules and the Signatures are still there so it is obvious the program kept some of the information. It makes no sense.

I have MacBook Pro 4.1. I had no problems with 10.5.6, and everything worked fine in both Mac OS and Windows 2008 Server Enterprise running on Bootcamp. I noticed after 10.5.7 update that the internal keyboard and track pad stop working. Caps lock light doesn't even come on. This is happening on both Windows and Mac OS. I did a firmware update right before this happened. Also, right after this, It didn't recognize my Windows HD till I did a PRAM reset. I have noticed that the mac is running hotter than it use to at work. I just converted from Dell to Mac. I love my Mac, but I am wondering.

First sign of a problem (after update to 10.5.7) was a message saying that my network printer was busy when trying to print, but get status information okay... This on a MacBook Pro, using wireless connection through a Billion router. NOT SOLVED, but same printer does still work on the Mac Pro through the same printer over a wired connection.

Second problem is that the MacBook Pro isn't visible to my Mac Pro. NOT SOLVED, but the Mac Pro is visible to the MacBook Pro.

about to try the combo updater mentioned above...

After I awake my MackBook from sleep (hibernate) I'm unable to connect to the network over bluetooth again (only after reboot it works). I use this kind of connection daily on the train during commuting to work and it worked flawless before the 10.5.7 update.
