Mac OS X 10.5.8 available through Software Update

The Mac OS X 10.5.8 update is now available through Software Update. Among the listed features are resolution for compatibility issues when joining AirPort networks, disappearing monitor resolutions in System Preferences, and Bluetooth reliability.

The update will also upgrade Safari to version 4.0.2, though I'm not sure if that includes those of us still on Safari 3 (I'll find out in a moment!) There are a number of other reliability and compatibility tweaks that are listed here. Security features are available here.

The update is not available through Apple's download site as of yet.

Edit (1:55 PT): I can confirm that this update does upgrade those of you still on Safari 3, like I was, to Safari 4.0.2. The combo update is also now available.

I have a new MBP that initially did not work with my wireless network at home. After installing updates from a wired connection, everything was just dandy.

HOWEVER. The 10.5.8 update broke my wireless connectivity again, so beware. There is regression here!

Can someone help?

I keep getting an error saying I don't have permission to run the updater. All other updates get installed no problem.

I have admin privileges. I've fixed permission. I've run repair disk. I've run DiskWarrior. I've reset root password. I've tried running as a different user. Nothing works.

I've searched the Apple help sections - but they're been no help, apart from saying to run ComboUpdater.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Thank you very much.

Whoa, I think the install may have got rid of the control+command+D dictionary shortcut. Not cool....

In case anyone is wondering: this version (10.5.8) seems to FIX the HDMI screen resolution issue that was introduced in 10.5.7 (where it only used 1920x1080 instead of 1920x1200). (I know the update notes said it addressed this issue, but it was nice to see that it was actually the case!)

At least that's the case in my setup. I've got a first-gen Intel Mac Mini with a Westinghouse LCD 1920x1200 monitor. I ran the 10.5.8 'combo updater', and everything went smoothly! Full screen resolution!!

Boot Time speedup on average about 10-15 seconds faster on my Unibody 2.0Ghz Macbook. Now boot time is about 48.1-50 Seconds compared to 1 minute 10-14 seconds. I'll upgrade my AIR to see if the speed increase applies. Report later.

Anyone have the same clocking?

After upgrading, my black MacBook Core Duo won't sleep. Either from the menu or closing the lid. Tried resetting the PRAM and a bunch of other stuff. Nothing seems to have fixed it.

these posts discourages me more to install the update. this macbook pro is on 10.5.4 and everything seems fine, until I started to install 10.5.7. I thought the laptop is pretty smart, by "refusing" to install the update, so I don't experience the inconviniences that people mentioned. now the 10.5.8 is out and it seemed to be fixing whatever mess made by the 10.5.7.

I've been using m$ for my whole life. this mac is my first non-windows stuff I use since last summer (june 08). I'd say apple is going toward m$ attitude by releasing buggy stuff and then making the consumers "work" to find those bugs and report it to them. it's a lot easier to fix a pinpointed problem rather than telling their engineers to find one problem in the OS. well anyway, it's just what I thought after experiencing the 10.5.7. don't take me into account just yet, I'm just a newbie voicing my own insignificant opinion. :) cheers people.
