Apple allows matte screens on 15-inch MacBook Pros again

Hooray for all us big-window dwelling Mac users! If you're craving something other than Apple's standard glossy screen, the anti-glare matte finish is an option again on the Apple Store for 15" MacBook Pros. Except it'll cost you $50 extra and replaces the black border with a silver one. Small price to pay for reducing eye strain, says I.

Love my iMac's glossy screen at home - have office lighting just so. My MBP? used everywhere train, planes, cheap hotels, starbucks etc... & in those circumstances find glossy screens reflections a pain. Therefore have stuck with my "old" MBP. Can't argue against those who can't see the point of matte screens, they prefer glossy fine, but matte is my preference on a laptop.

Thanks for the choice Apple, now have an excuse to upgrade to a unibody with matte screen...

I ended up buying a new 17" MBP over a 15" for three reasons -- matte finish, higher resolution and the ExpressCard slot. Like most anything else, you'll hear pros and cons on both sides of the argument because people have different requirements and preferences. Don't dismiss others just because yours aren't the same.

I'm a coder, so I need to be able to read small 9-point text all day, and a glossy screen was not conducive to my work environment with all of its lovely overhead fluorescents. I also needed the ExpressCard slot so that I could put in a multi-card reader rather than a single SD card slot.

Since the MBP was going to be my first Mac, after 20+ years on a PC, I test-drove both glossy and matte displays in an Apple store before deciding on the matte finish. There were reflections galore, even in the Apple store's subdued overhead lighting. Also, the screen resolution of the 15" is still too low for my needs; 1680x1050 would've been preferable. Again, my requirements are different from yours.

That actually explains something for me. I had been wondering why my refurbished 17in late 2008 model didn't have the black border. its cuz its anti-glare. I get it now

Strain or no strain... I'm glad antiglare is back. I told myself I wouldn't buy a new one until they came back with these screens. I'm currently running a 15" MacBook pro late 07 model and I love it. It's not so much as to eye strain Apple was worried about... But more so the graphic designers and artists who used their products and found the colors on the glossy to be a little overpronounced. Antiglare is true color. Glossy is exaggerated. Looks like I need to come up with some money now to buy this

And I just ordered one of these yesterday, when the option was not available...

As did I. My 15" MacBook Pro shipped this morning just as I saw this article.

Hallelujah!! Just a couple weeks ago I had finally come to terms with the fact that I would have to get a 17" Macbook Pro when my old 15" finally kicks the bucket. Now at least I have options. Just feel bad for everybody who didn't have that option when they purchased.

Apple removed matte screens so they could nickel & dime people by adding it as a option...

Am I the only one that remembers that high end CRT displays have an antireflective coating on the glass that ISN'T MATTE?? Is there any reason they don't put this on LCD screens? It certainly isn't because it's flat since the coating was applied to both flat and curved monitors, plus just about any mediocre lens out there.

No, you are not alone. I also keep complaining that all achievements in ergonomics have been chucked out of the window just for some brighter colours... :(

To be honest, I have an older MBP but I still prefer the look of the black keyboard from my old PowerBook Ti. I'm not that bothered about the black/silver bezel but the new keyboards do look much nice to me. However, I'll confess that the silver keyboard of my current MBP has grown on me.
