Apple issues patch to speed up Airport after troublesome 10.5.8 update

Apple has just released a patch to the AirPort client to remedy the wireless performance problems stemming from the recent Mac OS X update to 10.5.8. Some users had been forced to downgrade or replace the wireless-specific kernel extensions to clear up the issues.

The update, weighing in at a svelte 1.4MB, purports to solve an issue found on certain MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Affected machines suffered from significantly slower wireless network speeds while operating on battery power.

Here's the official description from tonight's Airport Client Update for MacBooks and MacBook Pros, version 1.0:
This update is recommended for some Intel-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and addresses an issue with AirPort performance while running on battery power. It may only be installed on:

MacBook (13-inch, Late 2007)
MacBook (13-inch, Early 2008)
MacBook (13-inch, Late 2008)

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2008)

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008)
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2008)
While I do own a potentially affected MacBook Pro, I did not experience the performance issues, so I can't vouch for the update's effectiveness.

Have you installed the patch and noticed an improvement (or not)?

I'm not quite sure what my Macbook is, but it must be an early-2008 or earlier Macbook because it's the 15-inch black one. So I downloaded the patch because, like so many others, I've been really frustrated with my wireless since I installed the 10.5.8 update. My husband has a toshiba and his wireless is like angelsong... I just used a stopwatch (AFTER INSTALLING THE PATCH!!!!) and it took a whopping 46 seconds to load Facebook. I'm really pissed and have no idea how to fix this. Anybody???

Somehow this is not for my late 2008 MBPro Build 9L30; very annoying, dropped connections: ditto "I'm not getting this patch in Software Update either. I have a Late-2008 MacBook with 10.5.8."

I'm having what sounds like the same problem with a macbook purchased in spring 09. I thought it was the new router I bought (Netgear Rangemax), and was going to take it back but now that I see everyone else complaining I see that that may not be it.

I have an early-2008 15" MBP. I noticed that 10.5.8 was really significantly worse than previous releases in terms of interactive ssh connections to other machines on my LAN (which is something I do a *lot*). An easy way to measure the problem, or something related to the problem, is to "ping" the laptop from elsewhere on your LAN. On power, the response is consistently sub-millisecond. Off power, 10.5.8 was showing erratic times up to and over 1 second :-(. It looks to me like they are trying to shut down the radio to conserve power, and overdoing it.

The patch makes it significantly better, but still not great.

This looks a whole lot like problems that I had last year when I first got the MBP. Recent 10.5 updates had pretty much cured the issue, but 10.5.8 brought it back ...

I've downloaded and installed the patch and I haven't seen any improvement at all. I didn't even really connect the slowdown to the system update in my mind until seeing this article (my brain is slower than my network, apparently). I may have to actually use the Apple Care support for once to try to solve this, if the patch worked for everybody else. Not me.

I have an early 07 MacBook that keeps dropping the connection to the USB HDD I have hooked up to my APE. I have not been able to backup over the air to Time Machine in over two months now.

I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro and a TimeCapsule 1TB, 10.5.8, updated everything, blah, blah, blah... so I downloaded the "patch." Unfortunately, the required restart sent my MBP into an infinite loop. I gave it an hour to finish shutting down, at which point I forced a kill.

Upon restart, my wireless is gone! I can't connect. AirPort Utility cannot see the TimeCapsule. My MBP can't join my AirPort network: it reports an invalid password or (usually) a timeout. Cycled the TimeCapsule and the DSL modem to no effect.

No doubt I'm the only one and it's all my own fault. But consider yourself warned.

Update: after further cycling and Network Diagnosing, things appear to have worked themselves out. Hope it stays that way.

Ever since 10.5.8, my MBP has been plagued with WiFi issues. My WiFi only seemed to work when I had my power cord attached and it seemed sluggish at best... as soon as I removed the cord, it completely crapped out, it couldn't even pull an IP address from my router. This update fixed it! I am writing this comment cord-fee!
