New unibody MacBook loses two ports

The new polycarbonate MacBook released today has gained some tantalizing new features, but in the process of redesigning the case to accept the new integrated battery, it's also lost two ports.

Just like the unibody aluminum MacBooks released last year, the latest version of the plastic MacBook has no Firewire port. This also means that the last Firewire 400 port in the Mac lineup has vanished – all new Macs, save the Firewire-free new MacBook, now have Firewire 800 only. Farewell, Firewire 400, we hardly knew ye.

But that's not all that's been lost: in a more puzzling omission, the MacBook has also lost its dedicated audio out port. Now one port does the job of both audio output and input.

I don't imagine the loss of Firewire will go down well with many people (it certainly didn't the last time this happened), but the audio port seems like less of an issue. If you're going to do any serious audio work, you're generally going to want to use a USB peripheral anyway, and having one port do everything makes it impossible to plug your headphones into the wrong port and unintentionally blast your potentially embarrassing iTunes playlist to passersby. Not that that's ever happened to me...

I know just what you mean. I have the firewire port but I don't even use or never have! I have a video camera but it uses USB! Thinking about it now, I have used the firewire port but it was only used to transfer files but I have been doing that lately over bluetooth.

I am in total agreement with Oakie and Nikster as they are a beacon of sensibility amongst the immense whining that screeches from the comments pages at TUAW. I never bother with brands but Apple are the only one that can get my money and my loyalty, if they produce something i don't like then i don't buy it.

the audio port should allow you to use the apple headphone / mic that comes with the iPhone. This is actually welcome for me.

Not this "Firewire 400 is dead" thing again. Firewire 800 handles both 400 and 800 with the right cable. There's no reason for any modern computer to have FW400 ports. It's like lamenting USB 1.1 is dead because computers only have USB 2.0 ports.

It used to be that if you wanted more features you'd have to shell out twice as much money to get a 15 inch MacBook Pro but Apple listened to the people and they now sell a 13 inch MacBook Pro for only $1199! It has firewire , an aluminum body and it's even slightly thinner and lighter than the 13 inch MacBook. The meaning of "pro" in MacBook Pro has an added meaning now that consumers aren't seeing. Professional gear is a little more mainstream than it was just a few years ago. People who buy MacBook Pros aren't only professionals, but people who are really tech savvy and people who have been using Macs longer. The MacBook is made for the average consumer and this current MacBook is perfect for this target group. Most average consumers don't need firewire. Almost all hard drive and SD card based video camcorders use USB now. Adding firewire to the MacBook would only increase costs and the reason Apple didn't lower the price to $799 is because they are giving us more ram, better graphics, and a bigger hard drive in the MacBook. This justifies Apple keeping the $999 price on the MacBook. Besides the graphics card, adding more ram and a bigger capacity hard drive are upgrades people do anyway. I'd say the only reason people can complain still is over the fact that only the 15 inch and 17 inch MacBook Pros have the antiglare screen option. No one is allowed to complain about the 200 dollar price difference between the 13 inch MacBook and the 13 inch MacBook Pro. If you need Firewire, then most likely you are somewhat tech savvy or you have more technical needs because of the fact that you even know what a firewire port or cable is. If you can't live without firewire, be happy that Apple has the option to purchase the very affordable 13 inch MacBook Pro. Also, I currently use a 2.8 Ghz 15 inch MacBook Pro with 4 GB of ram, an antiglare screen and a 500 GB 7200 rpm harddrive and my previous mac was a first generation 2.0 ghz 15 inch intel core duo MacBook Pro. I'm not against firewire and I know this new MacBook isn't the right mac for me but it will be the choice mac for many consumers. If you don't fall into this category then go buy a 13 inch MacBook Pro. I can guarantee you will be very happy with your purchase.

Somatiknyc:

First: Obviously new computers are faster & cheaper than the old ones.
Second: The Macbook targets casual users, those users don't even know what firewire is.
Third: If you work, then you can invest some money on a new machine, that meets your needs instead of whining.
Fourth: Don't you want to buy a new machine? Ok go ahead.
