Apple updates Java for Snow Leopard and Leopard

Apple just released a Java update today, bring improvements to Java in Mac OS X. Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1 for Snow Leopard updates Java SE 6, while Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6 updates J2SE 5.0 and Java SE 6. Both of these updates improve reliability, security, and compatibility for Java.

The Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6 update also disables J2SE 1.4.2, as it's no longer being updated to fix issues.

These updates can be downloaded with Software Update, or from the Apple Support Downloads page.

I am purchasing SnowLeopard now, as I have time to set it up during Christmas.

Will I get 10.6.2 with all updates, Or do I have to download a hundred updates and get 10.6.2 from 10.6.0 ?

I am getting the $29 Leopard Upgrade.

"Do I have to download a hundred updates?"

Jash, you're switching from Windows, aren't you? I have never, never had to download "hundreds" of updates for my Macs. But I have often had to download dozens of updates for my XP boxes at work, reboot, download more updates...

Worst case scenario, you'll get a 10.6.0 disk. A combo update for Snow Leopard plus a handful of others should get you up to speed.

@Maneki Nico: Well, I was a Windows user but am using Macs from the last 2 years, so I wouldn't call myself a PC user. But I have noticed lot of iTunes, QuickTime, Airport, Security Update, Java Update, OS Update, etc. that come at intervals. So I just wanted to know whether I will have the latest software in-the-box.

Also, SnowLeopard comes with an older version of Flash, as mentioned in this blog. So getting the latest update out-of-box would be much better.

The great news is that it didn't break compatibility.
We have a Corporate Website that we have to access from Work, but the latest update of Sun Java for Windows breaks compatibility.

Meanwhile, I can access this site from Safari on my MBP, even with this Java Update.

Sorry to hear about your Child's program not working anymore. My company's Corporate DMS still works fine on MacOSX but doesn't work in Windows anymore.

I seriously think Java is past it's prime. I'd hate to have to use anything that is based on Java nowadays.

Upon downloading this update, my Mac (10.5.8) froze with the spinning wheel for over 2 hours. Proceed with caution.
