Rumor: Intel's Core i5 to show up in MacBook Pros this month

Spanish website faq-mac.com had an interesting tidbit this morning. As seen in the screenshot from the site, an Intel Retail Edge program email showed a giveaway for a MacBook Pro. While that's not unusual -- a MacBook Pro makes a great prize for any contest -- the email showed that the MacBook Pros in question were equipped with Intel Core i5 processors. Existing MacBook Pro models use Intel's Core 2 Duo processors.

A loose translation of the pertinent section of the email shown above says:
January prize draw: Win a MacBook Pro

Increase sales this month and have two opportunities to win a MacBook Pro equipped with the accelerated response offered by the Intel Core i5 processor.
A MacBook Pro with a Core i5 processor would have substantially better performance than the Core 2 Duo-based model, while not reducing battery life. While no date has been announced by Apple for the release of a new MacBook Pro, there's a possibility that such a device could be announced at the rumored January 27th media event.

Hi,

I was looking to by a Macbook Pro this weekend but of course this has put me off. I was planning to get the entry level 15" - do you think its likely that a core i5 will end up in that model and if soe for a very similar price?

The model shown in that ad is the aluminum / pre-unibody model.

No it isn't Brian, the screen bezel is black.

Of course that doesn't mean this isn't just wild speculation on the part of whoever is running this promotion, hardly a reliable rumour source...

Personally I'm in the "hope they jump straight to Core i7 Arrandale" camp, since I'm long overdue for replacing my '05 PowerBook G4 and was holding off to see what the new Unibody is.

You can see the old-style keyboard, raised button below the trackpad, and infrared sensor near the latch. The screen bezel is just dark.

So, I have a 3 year old 233 Ghz Core Duo MacBookPro with 3GB.

How much faster would an i5 or i7 be?

I actually expect new MacBook Pros to be announced next week and not at the Jan. 26th/27th event.

What makes you think that.

I've been waiting and waiting for the next upgrade so I can get one.

MBP's are suppose to be top of the line.

I do hope they give the option for an I7.

A fully tricked out 15" MBP for $3000 with only an i5 makes Jesus' penis flaccid.

MBP 15'' with Core i7 Arrandale, ATI Radeon Mobility 5870 GPU, anyone want it?

I certainly hope this isn't the case. The Core i5 is nice, but it's only a 30% or so speed increase over current Core 2 Duo's. The i7 is where the major performance boost is, and it runs at the same power usage as the i5. If I'm paying MacBook Pro prices, I want the i7. Better to get a low-end refurb MacBook for the short term, and wait for them to put a serious improvement in there.

I would just want the i% in a 13" of 15" MacBook Pro.30% is a good boost. the 17" with the option of the i7 over the i5 would be nice, just the the 27" iMac's give the option. Plus the extra $ of the i7 would drive the price up to much for the mid sized MacBooks. Apple likes to keep at about the same price point. But this is just my opinion.

Let's hope Apple is smarter than Dell and actually gives you a proper 120 or 130w power supply. *Cough Studio XPS 16 Cough 90w throttlegate*.
