University of Oregon shows off engraved MacBook Pros

The engraving isn't just aesthetic; it's useful, too. In addition to the school branding, each laptop has a specific number engraved on the bottom of it, which helps prevent theft and helps the school track down wayward laptops. Cult of Mac has a great little interview with the engraver, with some fun insider info about how this is all done (he's even engraved fingernails, which sounds a little gross). We've seen some cool engraving projects before, but I like this one; functional and good-looking.

I've always been jealous of the folks who get free laptops from their work or school (back when I was in school, I used a paper notebook...

Just to put an "educated" comment out there: the University gets tax money. That includes the athletic department. So no, athletic departments are not entirely self-sustainable. If my tax money is going to support a new student athlete building that I'm not allowed into, and gives free Macbooks to people who can throw a ball, I want my money back. Although it does support other aspects of the University like programs and education, I fortunately have access to those. As a taxpayer and as a student at Nike University, I demand use of all facilities that my tax money goes to, as well as the free technology that my taxes help buy.

January 23 2010 at 2:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAs a Duck I think it looks great, I see why they are doing it for security reasons too. That stands out pretty clear and if you end up ripping it off you'll pretty easy to spot.
Every University has its major donors, that's just how things get done; UW gets Microsoft/Gates, UO gets Nike/Knight and OSU gets the Bean Dip Company *s*
The difference is the money from the Gates gets spent on academic stuff like buildings and research, while Phil Knight funds the football teams hideous uniforms :) Green could be such a great color and ya'll gotta go mess it up with the neon yellow power-ranger look all the time.

As a student at Oregon State though, we are retaliating by introducing a special Beavers engraved MacBooks.
This voids your warranty anyways. I checked w/ Apple because I wanted to get my info engraved on the back. So if you do get yours engraved, say good bye to your warranty.

January 23 2010 at 10:52 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyas a student attending Oregon State, (the bitterly rival of U of O just down the road), I say, THIS PISSES ME OF BIG!
I'm going to rally the Beaver Nation, and retaliate, by putting our school logo engraved on OUR Macbooks, and not only on Macbooks, but on iPods as well.
Looks like the Opera Icon to me.
