Macworld 2010: Violet Blue

A couple of years ago Violet Blue attempted to make nice with Steve Jobs (or just shake his hand, really) and was rather infamously rebuked by the persnickety CEO. Despite this, she's maintained a love affair with Apple before and after, citing the style, design and attention to detail and user experience that Apple products are famous for as logical reasons for her affinity. In addition to being an unrepentant Apple fangirl, Violet is a sex educator and author of several books on the subject, and she stands at the intersection of sex and technology, once giving an excellent talk on sex and privacy on the Internet for Google which you can watch here.

I chatted with Violet about Macworld without Apple, the iPad, the lack of Flash on iPhone and iPad, and the squeaky-clean App Store. Part one is below and part two is on the next page.

The porn industry is not failing because "it doesn't adapt". It's failing because you can get porn for free on the internet, you can get it completely anonymously, and because there's a glut of people ready to have sex on video. The porn industry is the first to jump onto new technologies.

I'm also a little tired of the people complaining that the iPad isn't a shit laptop. She wants an iPad with ports and keyboard? I believe Apple makes that already. In business, you should find the thing you could be the best at and do that. Running our current applications and OS on a tablet would be a bad experience. It might look flashier or more futuristic to run Photoshop or Excel with your fingers, but you'd be better off with a Wacom and a keyboard. Apple found its "hedgehog concept" (from Good To Great, by Jim Collins) and created a tablet that could be the best tablet, rather than a mediocre laptop.

Think to yourself: In which situations could an electronic pad be better at than a laptop? Reading magazines, newspapers, comics, and books? Playing casual games like crosswords, Text Twist, Peggle, Monopoly, most Gameboy DS titles? Surfing the web while lying down in front of the tv or standing up on the subway? Recipe book, where you don't have to worry about crumbs in the keyboard? Listening to music with liner notes and album art? Watching movies and tv? Now make this device the BEST at doing those things. Looks like you have yourself an iPad.

What Apple has found is that the majority of things a person might use a smaller, inexpensive mobile computer for can be made better by removing the things they don't use. Our current computer usage is a lot like taking a hovercraft to work. Sure it "does more" but I usually stay on the road, so I have a car instead. If the iPad doesn't sound like the device for you, then you're probably being serviced by the Macbook family, already.

Sorry.. huge tangent. Violet Blue sucks.

Valuable thoughts, however. "Better at a few key things". It's taken me a little while to warm up to the iPad, it's posts like yours that remind me why it's going to be great.

Violet Blue? The publicity hound who got into the huge fight with Boing Boing, resulting in all of her former posts being deleted from that site? The person who sued the porn star with the same pseudonym (the actress had been using it since 2000, but the publicity-seeker had trademarked hers).

That's the lady you're interviewing. The one who is now creating a fake controversy about Steve Jobs to increase her name recognition. Her relevance to the mac world is zero. Stop it.

Wyrding? Aren't you the libel-hound who initially wrote:

"The publicity-seeking Violet Blue who slept with Jimmy Wales so that her wikipedia entry could be cleaned up? That's the lady you're interviewing. The one who is now creating a fake controversy about Steve Jobs to increase her name"...

then you changed your mind about publishing that? That's what my Google News Alert showed me before you thought better of your baseless words. What is it about anonymity and the Internet that leads people to think it's okay to spew groundless defamatory attacks?

"attempted to make nice with Steve Jobs"

"I saw that Steve Jobs was just hanging out on the Macworld Expo floor, not in conversation, not talking to anyone, and poking at his iPhone in the middle of the wandering public, so I walked over,"

Wasn't he talking to someone at the time? We hear violet's side, but If i recall rightly, he was talking with some pretty senior folk, and she interrupted from behind their conversation.

One question: WHERE did you get those mic's. I must have one. Who makes them?

I'm thankful that the App Store is "squeaky clean"...well almost. I get sick of seeing all the boobs and thongs apps taking up valuable space in the Top 25 of lifestyle and entertainment.

If they are going to do that, they really need to have a separate App Store that requires age verification through a credit card.

That mechanism is in place already. You have to have a CC or PayPal account to buy off the store, and there are plenty of age gates in place. Apple merely needs to enable it for apps.

Which they refuse to do so far.

I thought there was news at MacWorld. Posts like this one make it seem like there is nothing worth reporting on there thereby causing the bar to be lowered.
