What do you want to see in Mac OS X 10.7?

It's time again for another Dear, Apple letter from the readers of TUAW. In our first series (part one, part two, part three) you told us what you want to see in the next iPhone OS. Now we need your help again to tell Apple what you want to see in the next version of Mac OS X.
Think the Finder needs a makeover? Does Mail need improvements? Address Book not cutting it for you? If you have ideas for the Dock, Finder, Dashboard, DVD Player, Exposé, Quick Look, Terminal, Image Capture, Preview, Spotlight, Spaces, Safari, Mail, iCal, Address Book, iChat, QuickTime X, Photo Booth, System Preferences, or Time Machine -- make yourself heard! Tell us what you would change in any of the featured apps in Mac OS X and we'll tell the world (and Apple) for you.
If you're dreaming of what Mac OS X 10.7 should be like, dream big. If you think Linux or Windows does something better and want the Mac OS to have it, tell us. Even if a mobile OS, like iPhone or Android, does something you think the Mac OS can benefit from, don't be afraid to say it.
Email your suggestions to me at tuawmacosx [at] me dot com by next Thursday, March 25th. Please note that only suggestions emailed to the address above will be included, but feel free to hash out your thoughts in the comments below. Also note that this series will not deal with iTunes, iWork or iLife (that's still coming up though). For the iPhone series I received thousands of emails; for the sake of my eyes (and sanity) bulleted lists are much appreciated. Don't be shy about sending in concept drawings or mock-ups either!

Why not make a built in program to make Mac apps?
October 03 2010 at 9:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk here is a query i got to change network locations frequently and getting in sys prefs-network and change location is tedious i wish in new o/s they make changing locations at a dropdown list on apple menu.
September 08 2010 at 6:23 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApple needs to integrate ical, address book, and email into one interface. It is a pain to constantly switch between apps. I want everything right in front of me all at one time, in one screen. Also ical needs the ability to make groups for tasks.
May 29 2010 at 6:14 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy request: application-specific volume control! [http://davidchambersdesign.com/application-specific-volume-control-in-mac-os-x/]
April 06 2010 at 3:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply1) Far better improvement for non-western OpenType fonts: (a) advanced non-western OpenType typography features (examples: Cantillation [trope] marks to be correctly positioned; Hyphenation in Heb; Pointing [vowel] Marks, i.e., correct positioning of vowel marks under and above letter; and correct positioning of Vowel Diacritics), and (b) complex text layout (contextual alternates, contextual ligatures, positional forms, ligatures, glyphs) for Polytonic Greek and Hebrew/Aramaic OpenType fonts.
2) Time Machine improvements:
⢠Allow T.M. to Synchronize files between multiple Macs (PLEASE!)
⢠Allow T.M. to make Bootable Duplicates!
⢠Allow T.M. to restore data to Backup Media, such as an optical disk or an USB drive.
⢠Allow T.M. to Compress files/folders.
⢠Allow T.M. to use Airport Disks, i.e., allow T.M. to recognize hard drives attached to my AirPort Extreme Base Station (including my NAS device).
⢠Allow T.M. to offer: full, incremental, differential, archive Backup Types.
⢠More, better Customization-Options, such as:
a) the ability to exclude any folder or individual file based on certain criteria (for example, all movie files over 2GB in size or all files with the extension .dmg);
b) let me opt to back up some files to one disk and others to a different one;
c) allow me to Adjust the Schedule of TM backups;
d) allow me to only backup the Documents folder, for example, or to limit backups of certain items (such as those large mailboxes) to daily or weekly intervals.
3) DiskVault feature (whole disk encryption with actual 256-AES, not the falsely advertised one w/CBC mode!):
4) Two more options for "Secure Delete", viz., Roy Pfitzner's 33-randam-pass method along with Shneier (7-Pass) method;
5) Tighter support for VPN:
Features:
1 network, 1 gateway at a time
Automatically start to take care of my routine tasks such as: checking for mail, mounting servers or volumes, accessing intranet sites, and even opening specific files.
Connect to multiple remote networks behind one VPN gateway
Create and edit new tunnels
Create multiple groups Multiple concurrent VPN connections
Network-to-Network
PGP support
SonicWALL Simple Client Provisioning (we use a SonicWALL NSA 240)
Start groups of connections
Start predefined tunnels
Security:
PKI-Token for 2-Factor Authentication
SmartCard Support
CryptoCard, ActivCard
XAUTH
Supported Encryption Algorithms:
AES-256
Twofish-256
Hash Algorithm: SHA2-256 and SHA2-512
Encapsulating protocol: IPSec and L2TPv3 (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol version 3)
perhaps..3d desktop...like the company(sun) jobs felt stoled mac stuff..well prove it. I'd love to see it on mac os x.7....the menu bar on top be moveable...
improved spaces to have an actual background on it when you bring spaces windows up..
idk minor aesthetics...not sure what actualy specific useable things...but id like to see the above stuff..
Everything has been said here, but I personally would like:
1- much more stable Finder. "Cocoa 64 bit Finder 1.0" needs to be stabilized. This is an ongoing complaint since Leopard. Many times it crashes (and, hopefully, relaunches) without any apparent reason. And more seriously, it sometimes doesn't relaunch at all, and a reboot is mandatory. Kills uptime = bad.
2- more resilient OS overall. Many times, installing applications then removing them doesn't delete the "/Library" part many of them install. A third party app shouldn't be needed to uninstall other apps. Sound framework also seems to be bugged, as it doesn't restart.
3- Multisession DVD burning and reading. This is an ongoing complaint since 10.1. I wouldn't hold my breath on this one, as optical media is very slowly becoming less relevant as hard drive prices go down. But would be immensely useful for those Win-switchers.
4- Make iCal, Contacts and Mail more integrated to Yahoo's cloud services (at least, it's not Google) and their iPhone OS counterparts. Too many times, I find iPod's Mail to be too simplistic to be fast to use.
5- Official ext2, ext3 and ext 4 support !!! There's no point in bragging about UNIX-compatible OS that's not capable of reading and writing to the most common UNICES file systems
6- Get rid of everything Google. If one absolutely wants to use the biggest private intelligence agency in the world, they know where to find it. For everyone else including Mr. Jobs, put your hands where your mouths are.
7- Reduce Mail to only MAIL functions. RSS feeds and Notes have nothing to do here.
8- Add feature to Time Machine to put up a reminder to rotate backups, and periodically burn optical media. These are still the cheapest way to store large amounts of data.
9- Add self-destruction feature (hardware and software), as in the iPhone OS, to render theft unprofitable
10 Most importantly, 64-bit-everything, including on machines with only a 32 bit EFI. EFI isn't directly used once the machine is booted. In addition, chances are that with 10.7 coming out, 32-bit machines remaining will be ripe for replacement.
11- REDUCE RAM USE !! Less real RAM used = less swap needed = faster performance for all of us who don't have SSDs.
@xbryan safari already supports HTML 5.
I agree with a previous post on making Mac OS X look more unified. Also, something needs to be done with safari. I'm not sure what but if there there were more extensions and add-ons being developed maybe more people would use it. I only use safari but it really is lacking add-ons.
A finder with faster networking and tabs like safari.
March 24 2010 at 12:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOf like to see a unified ispector drop down from the toolbar instead of all these extra windows floating around. Kind of like the new menus in iPhone os 3.2. You would be able to click it open and it would stay expanded until you close it. It would change for every application that's open and would also be able to be pinned in the dock.
