10.6.3 released

Head on over to Software Update to find the latest OS X dot release. 10.6.3 is now available. Here's Apple's write-up on the matter:

The 10.6.3 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:
  • improve the reliability and compatibility of QuickTime X
  • address compatibility issues with OpenGL-based applications
  • address an issue that causes background message colors to display incorrectly in Mail
  • resolve an issue that prevented files with the # or & characters in their names from opening in Rosetta applications
  • resolve an issue that prevented files from copying to Windows file servers
  • improve performance of Logic Pro 9 and Main Stage 2 when running in 64-bit mode
  • improve sleep and wake reliability when using Bonjour wake on demand
  • address a color issue in iMovie with HD content
  • improve printing reliability
  • resolve issues with recurring events in iCal when connected to an Exchange server
  • improve the reliability of 3rd party USB input devices
  • fix glowing, stuck, or dark pixels when viewing video from the iMac (Late 2009) built-in iSight camera
For overall details look here or find security information here. A combo updater is also available.

While we're on the subject, we're guessing there will be a new version of iTunes this weekend.

I have a 2007 Mac-book, 2.4Gig, 4Gig ram, 320Gig hard drive with lots of free space. Issues encountered, now a 10 minute start-up time, processors appear to be working overtime, case is getting very hot, and as I have a dual boot system the eRFIT partition is no longer there. Very disheartening. I have reloaded 10.6.2 from the backup, but it too, is slow in the boot up procceedure. I had tried to use to combo update as well, prior to reloading 10.6.2. I am running a bit thin on options and patience. Have had to resort to using windows as a last resort.

I had the same issue. I had to restore from Time Machine. I finally figured out that the issue that I was having was trying to download and install the ITunes update as well as one or two other updates at the same time as the OS update. I did the updates one at a time and all is well.

An interesting small change: The "Snow Leopard" desktop picture has been changed to hide the animal's teeth on the lower jaw. I wonder why.

Downloaded without a hitch. Installation took a while, and at end of process got stuck on the "aurora" screen when trying to re-boot after install, had to do a hard reboot, booted up, all works great so far, seems a little snappier than before :-) Also, Aperture, which was SLOW, even after the most recent patch, now opens, loads, and imports photos A LOT faster, interesting.

No, it's not resolved, or at least, one major bug which prevents files on SMB shares being written over - IS STILL NOT FIXED.

An older item named “test” with extension “.rtf” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the newer one you’re moving?

Worked just fine for me, what are you talking about? I think if overwriting a file via SMB was a bug, then Apple would have had major issues before 10.6.3. Fix your permissions.
