Pennsylvania spycam case heating up
A student who says he was spied on by school officials on his Mac laptop has filed new claims in the case.Harriton High School sophomore Blake Robbins claims pictures were taken of him while he was asleep and only partially dressed, and instant messages that he sent to friends were captured.
The Lower Merion school district is now conceding that the effort it was making to keep track of school owned laptops was misguided, and today the district said it would release the results of its own internal investigation "good and bad."
In a court filing, Robbins says the school captured more than 400 webcam images and screen shots using his computer. Robbins lawyer says that thousands of pictures were obtained from laptops issued to students by the school tech staff.
Lawyers involved in the case met Friday for a status check and to discuss pending issues.
According to an attorney for the Robbins family, school technology coordinator Carol Cafiero refused to answer questions during a recent deposition, citing her 5th Amendment rights against self-incrimination.
The suburban Philadelphia school has issued Mac laptops to 2,300 students at two high schools. The FBI joined the case in February.

You could delete the kext for the iSight hardware, or have a automator workflow that makes the camera work when allowed programs are running and not work if someone attempts to remotely activate it.
April 19 2010 at 8:55 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhoever came up with that idea at the school has no common sense, then again, neither do those that were in agreement with it. There are better ways to track hardware these days. Unless you are a peeping tom, there would be no reason to use the camera. I'm an IT guy and I find this rather disgusting and I hope someone from the IT dept at the school had the guts to at least voice their opinion when they were asked to install the software.
April 18 2010 at 7:55 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi remember watching a video clip on line a few weeks ago about this story, and the green light DID turn on when the camera was activated. In the video, some students were seen using the cameras (in conjunction with Photo Booth) as a mirror for checking their hair and makeup, so as the green lights were already on, there really wasn't any way for the students to be aware if the camera was being used solely for their own purposes, or if they were on because they were being remotely viewed.
in the video, the school's principal sent a message to a student who was using the camera in-class, jokingly telling her to pay attention to her teacher (or something to that effect). to which the student responded by quickly ducking out of the camera's view. I'll post a link to that video if i can find it.
anyway, i do believe that the green light is activated by hardware, but i'm not an expert. But with that having been said, i wouldn't be surprised, like how cellphone microphones can be remotely activated and used to eavesdrop by the FBI, (even if the phone is powered off), if the isight camera could be remotely activated and used in a similar fashion by federal law enforcement agencies without the green light turning on (or even if the computer is powered off). Don't quote me on that, because that's just my speculation, but in any case it's probably best to cover the lens with tape regardless if you have such concerns.
Yeah can someone varify if the green LED is activated via hardware or if software can use the camera without lighting the lamp? I thought about this when seing some videos online of people being recorded over their own webcam by hackers (were windows machines but i asked myself if the green LED is a safe signal)

April 17 2010 at 1:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThese people should be executed.
sick scum.
didn't the original isights come with a cover? this is one reason i thought the built in isight cams would be a mistake.
apple should think about a manual sliding cover for the cams.
Or just allow you to disable the camera? :p

lets not forget the simplicity of something physical. we tech heads, who always like to see a software solution to something real tend to overlook the raw power of the physical world.

The people at the school who are responsible for this need to spend time in prison for it. I doubt they will, but they should
April 17 2010 at 11:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyjail might be a tad much. depends on when they turned those cameras on. I'm assuming the snaps were visible on the laptop for the kid to know he was undressed etc. if that was true then yes, that could fall into child porn and is criminal and federal
certainly loss of their jobs is in order. and the company that created the software should be investigated to make sure they haven't been turning on cameras cause i'm sure they had the means as well.
Lesson to students/people everywhere that have camera equipped issued to them from school or work...COVER THE CAM WITH TAPE! ;-)
April 17 2010 at 11:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe students were told that if they messed with the camera in any way they could face expulsion. The parents and students were never told about the cameras being used by the school's IT department to track down the laptop in case of loss or theft or that the IT department could remotely access the cameras even when the laptop was at home.
