Java for OS X updated

Fire up your Software Update, because there's a Java update waiting for both Snow Leopard and Leopard users. For Snow Leopard (requires 10.6.3), there's Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2, which weighs in at around 80 MB. For Leopard users (requires 10.5.8), there's Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7, a much larger 122 MB download.
Both updates bring Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_20 (compatible only with Intel-based Macs), while the Leopard-only update also updates Java SE 5 (compatible with Intel and PowerPC Macs) to 1.5.0_24. The upshot of these updates? "Improved reliability, security, and compatibility" of Java in OS X, with more detailed security notes available for the truly curious.

how can a Java update take so much space?
a little add on app that is like a quarter of an OS? what gives?
Java would never have gotten off the ground if it had started out this size when we all dialed up at 28.8 kbps :)
and we're all so quick to say "bloatware" to Windows ... hahaha
Does anyone know if this update messes up MATLAB?
May 18 2010 at 7:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOut of curiosity, I just started using Matlab earlier this week, how does the update affect Matlab? And has any previous update messed it up in the past?
May 18 2010 at 9:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMatlab is built on java. The entire UI is built on java and matlab GUIs are also java based. In the past java updates have messed up functionality in the matlab editor.
if you run "matlab -nojvm" you can see what matlab can do without java (nothing outside of the command line is the short answer).
I depend on matlab heavily at work, so i never install java updates until others have tested them.
This very update includes Chrome support. Go get it.
