MacBook gets a stealthy update

I didn't even see the Apple Store go down, did you? Well, no matter: the MacBook has been updated. Its base specs are virtually identical to those from the Vietnamese leak a few days ago:

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
2 GB RAM
250 GB 5400 RPM hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 320M integrated graphics card

The one feature not consistent with the Vietnamese leak: the updated MacBook has gained the same 63.5 watt-hour battery as the 13" MacBook Pro, leading to up to 10 hours of "wireless productivity" according to Apple's estimates. The MacBook box from the Vietnamese leak showed the old 7-hour battery graphic, which led us to believe the battery might not have been updated.

The MacBook's price remains unchanged: US$999 for the base model.

Is it just me, or does the 13" MBP's SD slot, 2gb more RAM, and better casing make that worth the extra $200? And to be clear, Apple JUST refreshed its specs amidst the new i5 and i7 MBPs, right?

No... they could do it the way Dell does it, where every mont or so, Dell is issuing retractions for erroneous prices and so on.

You're right, it's all PR. The alternative PR is just like the Best Buy email I got yesterday which retracted a price error on their website, or the one I got from CompUSA last week retracting a deal that was published in error.

No, Apple doesn't need to take the store down at all -- the alternative is to be issuing retractions for errors all the time!

I was hoping this would coincide with the return of the back to school promotion. Guess I still have to wait to get the MBP I want.

I'm of the same opinion, I have a early 2009 MacBook 2 GHz 4 GB ram 500 GB hdd so it's really pricey just to add some MHz to the cpu. The firewire is only 400 mps. but my music equipment is mostly firewire. and a USB card reader I can get almost for free.
But for people that want their first MacBook this is a good choice.

Is there any word on if this is in fact what was referenced to by that new model number? I'm hoping there's still an updated Air in the near future!!

They updated the specs but the body text still says 7-hour battery.

I guess taking the store down might be how they get such things right :)

Now, when do we get the updated Mini ?!?! Grump. Make it soon!

It's looking like the 13" MBP now needs a spec bump ...

Yeah they need to go ahead and put a 2010 cpu in there at the least...

I think Apple made the right decision here. Give up the 2010 chip for a modern graphics chip. It was an either-or situation for this model.

My current MacBook has a firewire port, an IR sensor, a remote, and a separate input and output audio jack. Sure, it's not as fast as the newer ones but it has everything I need for my job. Why would I "upgrade" and lose my firewire port, the IR sensor for my remote, and my extra audio port (I use both)? This newer MacBook is not a better product in my opinion. I get less for the same price I paid years ago. I shouldn't have to pay more for a 15" MacBook Pro when all of that used to be standard features on MacBooks. Not even the 13' MacBook Pros have two audio jacks! What if Chevrolet took the stereo, the side-view mirrors, and A/C out of their economy model car and told you to buy a Corvette if you wanted those features back, would you do it?

I love Apple products but DAMN! I can get more ports on most netbooks than on the current MacBook. If I wanted a 15" laptop, I'd buy the 15" MacBook Pro but I don't want nor do I need the 15" MacBook Pro. The older 13" MacBook was the perfect size with just the right connectors. It's a shame they messed with perfection. I'd gladly give up the newer CPU and GPU to have all the old features back. I guess I will not be upgrading anytime soon. I hope my current MacBook lives a long life.

I definitely have to agree with you on that one. I had an older black MacBook and sold it to try Windows notebooks for a while. Then I came back to Mac when they first released the aluminum unibody MacBook (the 13" pro didn't exist then). Sold that and went to a Windows desktop. Now I came across a price that I can't beat for the latest MacBook and I jumped. But as you said a lot of the features are missing from when I first jumped into Mac waters with the black MacBook.

But honestly each person has to gauge what they need and choose accordingly. I for one would not be willing to accept an older GPU or CPU as the work I do needs newer technology to go over without any hiccups. And I never used the firewire port or separate output audio port. I did on occasions use the IR remote but not to the point that I even notice it now.

The price for the 13" MacBook Pro really isn't too bad when compared to the entry model MacBook that Apple offers. But of course when compared to similarly spec'ed Windows notebooks then all the Mac's seem overpriced. But you get what you pay for and with Apple products I feel like you're getting quality hardware to match quality software.

In Europe speed bump and price bump... from 899 euro to 999 euro (from 1115 dollars to 1239 dollars, tax included)

Maybe I am disconnected from the Universe in some way but why would I now buy a 13" MBP?

So I can carry around an aluminium unibody case?

Same specs... except it (The MacBooK) doesn't have a SD slot and the MB is .9 kilos heavier. No firewire port for the MacBook... And the backlit keyboard..

Hmmm...
Never mind - the MBP 13" is still a better deal if you need the extras...
