TUAW is looking for news bloggers

Does your feed reader overflow with juicy Apple news? Are you capable of writing crystal-clear copy backed by a deep knowledge of Apple gear and software? TUAW is looking for you!

We're looking for three news bloggers. Here are the specifics:

  • You must be over 18. Sorry, no exceptions. It's US law and AOL policy.
  • If you live on the East Coast and keep regular business hours, this is probably not going to work for us. We are looking for bloggers on Pacific Time (GMT -7:00), somewhere a few hours ahead of the UK (GMT +2:00, preferably) and Asia (GMT +9:00). Bloggers in those time zones will get bumped to the top of the list (unless you keep very odd hours).
  • Fluent English is a prerequisite, but more than that; you must be a master of writing clean copy and understandable headlines, plus you need to grok the use of tags and understand the basics of search optimization.
  • While we love switchers, we're not looking for Apple newbies; you need an experienced view of Apple's products and platforms. We're not necessarily looking for hardcore coders or engineers, either; somewhere in the middle is probably best.
  • You should have a solid understanding of the news business, be familiar with how articles are picked from the hundreds of potential stories out there, and be willing to accept editorial leadership and guidance on a daily basis.
  • Lastly, you must be willing to commit to a regular schedule and post frequently within that schedule. We are looking for dedicated writers with energy, stamina and commitment.

Continue reading for the rest of the details.

Still with us? Great. We work in a fast-paced news environment and you'll be expected to pick up stories and turn them around quickly while you're on shift. Yes, this is a paid gig.

To apply, send 3 brief news sample posts to the email address below. These can be old stories, but the point is to demonstrate that you know how to write coherently, and how to structure a story so that a reader can quickly discern what it's about. Ideally, the submissions will be your manuscript before any editors got their hands on the copy (so we can see that you know how to proofread your own work).

This email address will be "on" until mid-November. After that we'll close it out, and you'll see our new writers on the site by the first week in December. Good luck!

Due to the high number of applications we receive for blogging slots, we regret that we are unable to respond to all applicants personally.

How does Indian Time (GMT + 5:30 Hrs) work? I follow a ton of Apple and other technology related feeds. I write decent copy (I'll obviously send you sample articles) and I'm also a web developer with good Mac experience.

An idea of money might be useful here... will payments be the size of 'beer money' or the same size as standard journalistic salaries, ie in the tens of thousands of pounds per year or more?

I understand it being AOL policy (and generally a good idea for a job like this) but I must point out that no US law exists that prevents people who are under 18 to get jobs as bloggers. Where on earth did you guys pull that one from?

Federal law states that anyone under the age of 16 cannot work full time hours. If you are 16 or older, Federal law says you can work full time hours as long as it is not a hazardous occupation.

Many states over rule this and have hour restrictions on anyone under the age of 18.

So... 3-5 stories a day. Is this considered to be a full time job? I'd love to apply but having a regular job might keep me from that

Victor, would a Hawaii Time Zone (-10 GMT) work within your time zone constraints?

We are only 2 hours back half of the year and 3 the rest. It's not that hard to make a minor adjustment of those hours if you really want this gig.

I interact with the TUAWnitians on a bi-weekly basis and have little or no issues with the time zones.

They have adopted the greeting TUAWloha so yeah they get the Ohana and Aloha spirit.

Victor Agreda Jr said, "Quoting my post: "Yes, this is a paid gig."

Also important: must be detail-oriented."

OK....This literally made me laugh out loud...

Regarding the "schedule" how frequent would one have to post/write?
Also, are there any sources that are off limits or "competition?" I follow Apple news, but I feel like 1 site seeds the story and tons of sites all have the same info. Are there really sources for inside info?

Great question. We're hoping if you can hit 3-5 news stories a day during the weekdays, that'd be optimal. More is better, but we'd like around 100/month *or more* ... Consistently :)

So it's a paid gig, but ... how much? Just an in-your-spare-time extra pocket money thing? Or a real job?

I am also wondering about this. I was just thinking about contacting you the other day to see if there was room for me.
