MacBook Pro BTO gets a silent speed bump

After distracting us with new goodies, Apple updated the MacBook Pro with a build-to-order CPU bump, bringing the full speed processor choice up to a 2.8GHz i7.

The upgrade will cost you US$400 and is limited to the 17-inch and 15-inch models. Consider this the polar opposite of the new Core 2 duo-powered MacBook Air -- huge, heavy and full of power and storage. If you need a maxed-out Apple portable, this is it.

Does anyone know if the MBP line will ever get a memory bump? Is it currentoly possible to put 16GB in 2 DIMMs?

The upgrade is $200 ($180 edu), not $400.

was hoping there would be spec bumps that shifted the power up across the line at the original price points... guess that was a pipe dream... wonder when the next mbp update comes? safe time to buy...?

Steve said at least three times yesterday, regarding the MacBook Air, “We think this is the future of MacBooks/laptops.” It’s safe to assume that this speed bump is probably the last big update before the holiday season, but the writing on the wall couldn’t be more clear that future MacBooks and MacBook Pros will be going in an Air-like direction. It would be surprising if that didn’t take form before next summer.

Like Christian said, it's pretty apparent that the rest of the laptop line will be getting aesthetic changes in the direction of the MBA sometime in the future. I'm guessing/hoping for a February update, as I seem to remember that being the pattern for a while (February/October updates, after the holiday and back-to-school rushes). I doubt they'd wait until next fall to refresh the line.
