10.6.5 Server update pulled by Apple

Update: Version 1.1 of the 10.6.5 updater is online. If you're going with it, best to use the Combo updater.

If you were listening in on the Talkcast last night, you heard Steve relay a tale of woe from a client who rushed to update his server to the latest Snow Leopard build, 10.6.5, only to encounter a slew of Open Directory problems -- and with no backup to revert to safely. (Let it go forth from this time and place: Do Not Do This.)

Seems like his buddy may not have been alone in finding the update less than ideal: AppleInsider reports that the update has been "quietly pulled" from Apple's servers.

The problems with the update, as reported on Apple's discussion boards, include DNS resolution issues, LDAP/Open Directory master hiccups and remote storage/server connection drops. None of it good, and none of it immediately subject to workarounds; let's hope there's a patch to the patch sometime very soon.

Isn't it common practice not to update enterprise software unless you need something specific in the update? Or is that just for windows?

In this day and age, it's pretty negligent to upgrade a server to a new OS with a backup you can restore to.

Uh, and who EVER updates their server software without waiting a month after the update release?

Nobody should, that's for sure.

I updated six servers and 150 clients, all heavily used by almost 500 journalism faculty and students. My primary DNS server stopped allowing my secondary and tertiary servers to get updates. I restarted the service on the primary and all is well.
Its not the end of the world. Half the idiots on the forums probably had those problems before they updated, they just didn't notice until some other idiot told them the sky was falling.

I'm sure Apple pulled it because they regard their customers as "idiots," yes, that must be it.

I updated the first night it was out. No issues that i saw here.

But then, i have only 5 active users. I do use a lot of things over AFP.

It might be related to the incremental updates. I downloaded the combo update. Incremental updates are a no-go in this building! (or im just lucky?)

:)

I've had some interesting issues with just the regular version of 10.6.5. It seems for me the update made it not possible for me to connect to my wireless N network.
