MacBook Pro updates may hit March 1

Danish blogger Kenneth Lund is reporting that he's heard from a large Danish Apple reseller that new MacBook Pros will arrive on March 1. Excluding a processor bump build-to-order option last October, the MacBook Pro line has not been updated since April 13, 2010.

The March 1 date is plausible considering that Intel is reportedly set to ship its new Sandy Bridge processors on February 20, and it has been previously reported that new MacBook Pros will drop in March. Also, March 1 falls on a Tuesday, which is traditionally the weekday that Apple chooses to announce new computer models.

Beyond the reasonable likelihood that the next MacBook Pros will use Intel's Sandy Bridge processors, there aren't any rumors floating around as to the specs of the next MacBook Pro line. Some speculate that the next version of the MacBook Pro might see a redesign, taking cues from the MacBook Air, including solid-state blade storage and elimination of the optical drive.

While I know this would never, ever happen - I'd like to see the optical slot become a large expansion bay that would allow a hot swappable optical drive, hard drive, SSD or battery. USB opticals are a pain in the ass, USB hard drives are slow. I do need an optical drive but USB drives are a pain, it'd be much easier to be able to load one when I need it and eject it when I don't for an extra battery. Could you imagine 12+ hours of life with a hot swappable battery? WIN. Give the expansion drives micro-USB for use on existing Macs and you've got hands down one of the most useful systems ever. Tether them to your desktop Mac, and get rid of the cables with your Macbook when frankly, cables are a pain in the ass.

PC makers tried the swappable drives, and they were clunky, fragile, and had all sorts of software issues. Apple could do it better.

Seriously Kenneth used to work at Humac a scandinavian Apple reseller, clearly the news came from them.

Read his blog and you would see that he has little or no knowledge about anything.

Hé posted a video og him and a fat guy spending hours jailbreaking the atv2....

I want more evidence

Two weeks from launch date and no invites to an event? You better hope it's delivered tomorrow or either forget either a redesign or that early a launch. Apple isn't going to put out a new looking product without an event.

With their Mac products they don't tend to have big events like they do for the iDevices.

Sorry, but that's not true. They may not have events for internal updates, but anytime there is even the slightest visual update they do have an event. There was even an event for when the iMac went 16:9.

Wouldn't it be great if there was the option to pick two out of three storage options: Optical, SSD, or traditional hard drive?

I have no need for an internal optical, but I'd love an SSD for apps/os and a separate HD for my music, photos, etc.

I'm hoping that the 13" model gets a screen resolution bump. The 13" MacBook Air has a 1440x900 display which is marginally higher than 1280x800 resolution of the current MacBooks. This seems like a reasonable move for Apple to make.

Oh and an i3 and an SSD as the default configuration for the 13" would be AWESOME

True that, if I can get a 13" i5, along with something 1440+px wide out the door for $1500, it's probably a done deal.

If the 13" MBP gets at least the Core i3 - I'm pulling the trigger. First Mac for me!
