FaceTime now in the Mac App Store, 720p video calling

Along with the launch of its new MacBook Pros, which include FaceTime HD cameras, Apple has released an updated version of its FaceTime application. The new FaceTime for Mac lets you send and receive 720p HD video calls on supported Intel Macs. The standard iSight cameras on previous Mac hardware deliver VGA-quality calls, while the new MacBook Pro 2011 line is capable of 720p HD video. All hardware that meets the minimum specs can receive HD calls through this updated application. The app will be bundled with the new MacBook Pros and is available as a 99-cent upgrade for owners of previous generation hardware.

Let's see $0.99 for 720p resolution, seems like a no-brainer to me, IF the folks you're calling are 720p capable.

The facetime icon on the doc seems to have replaced the ichat icon. Will ichat cease to exist and be reincarnated as facebook?

Yea, sticking with the beta, I'll pay .99 when it does more than free apps.

Do I need to uninstall Facetime Beta first before installing the new version Facetime 1.0?

@Frank The beta will no doubt expire soon, remember Boot Camp beta? And the charge is for accounting purposes, like the Airport/early iOS uodates on the Touch ... and it's 59p, get over it ...

I was really hoping to see Apple do something with Facetime on the desktop that would reveal it as being a true upgrade from iChat/Adium. Now it just seems like another thing I need to have around just in case. What are the benefits of even paying for it instead of continuing to use the beta version? With a "premium" price on the app store and no hint of a Windows client or any adoption outside of Apple's hardware, Facetime seems doomed to failure already.

Since Skype works with iPhone 4 I don't see any reason to use facetime.

I was under the impression that FaceTime would be replacing iChat in the upcoming Lion OS? So why start charging now?
