Square and Apple have plans for Monday
If you follow @jack, otherwise known as Twitter co-founder and current Square CEO Jack Dorsey, then you'll know that at about 2 PM EDT today, he tweeted the cryptic Instagram (a company he's invested in) message and photo shown at right. A square with apples in it -- that's pretty obvious there, Jack.
Square card readers are currently selling in Apple retail stores, but it appears that there's more to the story. The company has a press conference scheduled for 10 AM PDT at its headquarters in San Francisco, and Dorsey's hint looks like a not-so-subtle message that the two companies are going to announce something big.
I speculated yesterday that Apple could be planning to use Square card readers with the Apple Retail iPads that are being rolled out, or perhaps Square and Apple have other plans up their respective sleeves. Fortunately, the announcement is just two days away and not life-changing, so we can all rest easy over this beautiful spring (or fall in the Southern Hemisphere) weekend.

It's already been conclusively demonstrated by several Apple employees that most Apple stores *already* use iPads and have them in the back in a pile, just like that picture you have seen, but do *not* use them for retail sales. There is no evidence that iPads will be used in the way this article suggests, nor does it even make sense to replace the smaller units they already use with larger iPads.
They are similarly unlikely to use the square dongle because they are actually harder to use than the current system and are intended for individuals, not corporations. Apple is going to sign up with square and become just another square customer with it's multi-billion dollar business? Why exactly would they do that?
If I had to guess, I would say it has something to do with cards, since the invitation actually says that's what it's about, and has pictures on it of cards.
Not impressed with Square. They bait you to join with the promise of a free card reader. But after providing your social security number, bank routing number and other information to verify your account and identity Square sends an email saying they're having encryption and security issue and the bottom line: no card reader for you. Security and encryption issues? They ought to sort that out before any offers or big announcements. That's a pretty lame reason not to follow through. They ask a high price of important data on a promise of a measly free reader and then they don't deliver. #fail.

After receiving no card reader, I had to contact SquareUp to find out what happened. They responded by saying the following:
"You were declined [a card reader] because we were unable to verify your identity."
Like I said, I received this notification after I had submitted my bank routing number, my social security number, my home address and even verified the amounts of the small deposits made to my checking account.
These above referenced steps are designed to verify identity, so I don't what the heck SquareUp is talking about when they flat out denied me a card reader citing encryption and security issues.
Pretty lame not to mention very alarming.
I think that Square will announce an NFC Dongle for iDevices and Macs which Apple will be using in its' stores for NFC transactions, and as part of iOS 5 and Lion integrated with iCloud to seamlessly pass whatever you are currently digitally doing from iDevice to Mac to iDevice to ... Using NFC communication among devices with a dongle.
May 21 2011 at 7:16 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have a feeling it will be an announcement by Square that will be of great importance and excitement to them as a company, but of little excitement to everyone else.
Doesn't Apple already have much nicer EasyPay readers on their Apple Store iPod Touches?
