MacBook Air updated with faster CPU, backlit keyboard, Thunderbolt port (Updated)

Update: Our apologies. Due to an editing error, the original version of this post had incorrect specs for storage and RAM on the 11" MBA; it also cited an 8GB BTO option for RAM on the 13", which is not available. This has been corrected.

As predicted, the MacBook Air has been updated hot on the heels of the release of OS X Lion. The update sees a few welcome upgrades to the hardware, including the return of backlit keyboards and an upgrade of the base RAM from 2 to 4 GB. The 11-inch MacBook Air now comes with a 128 GB SSD, far roomier than the cramped 64 GB last generation's base model had. The 11" Air now includes 64 and 128GB flash drives as standard options, with a BTO option of a 256GB drive. The 13" includes 4GB of RAM by default, and the 11" has both 2GB or 4GB models.

The MacBook Air's CPU has seen significant upgrades to Intel's "Sandy Bridge" architecture. The base CPU is an Intel Core i5 clocked at 1.6 GHz, and build-to-order options exist to bump the CPU as high as a 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7 (only for the higher-cost version in each screen size). These are by far the fastest processors the MacBook Air has ever had, and while it'll likely be a couple of days before they're benchmarked, they have the potential to be around as powerful as a 2008-model MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Air has also gained a Thunderbolt I/O port, bringing it in line with the MacBook Pro and iMac updates from earlier this year. The Thunderbolt port replaces the MacBook Air's former Mini DisplayPort and gives it the fastest port yet seen on Apple's ultraportable line. It's designed to pair nicely with the new Thunderbolt display.

Tech specs of the new MacBook Air models are below.

11-inch:

  • 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU (1.8 GHz Core i7 build-to-order)
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000
  • one model with 2 GB RAM and 64 GB SSD; another with 4 GB and 128 GB SSD
  • Thunderbolt, Two USB ports
  • OS X Lion
  • Available now for US$999 and $1199

13-inch:

  • 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU (1.8 GHz Core i7 build-to-order)
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000
  • 4 GB RAM (8 GB build-to-order)
  • 128 or 256 GB SSD
  • Thunderbolt, Two USB ports, SD Card port
  • OS X Lion
  • Available now for $1299 (128 GB) or $1599 (256 GB)

The latest models will go on sale online today and starting tomorrow Thursday, July 21 in retail stores.

Why is this in there, not only is it wrong as the base model (11") is still 2GB ram and 64GB SSD (Color me disappointed) but you even have the correct spec in the end of the article...

Disappointing refresh, I'll be looking at the all the used Airs of the last model that people will be selling at half the price now :p

Is there not a slight design floor with the new MB Air? The mag safe and thunderbolt port appear to be on opposite sides. Does this not make plugging in the new thunderbolt display somewhat tricky?

Don't count on picking one of these up at your nearest apple store any time soon -- I went down today without calling (me being a dumbass baically) and waited 20 minutes just to talk to a salesperson -- who promptly told me they don't have any of the new mac airs or mac minis in store yet (lol). I said "you're joking right? it's lion launch day and you actually have them on display right over there...so you have something on display that people can't buy...!?" -- the salesperson then tried to sell me a core2duo mbair (previous gen) saying "they aren't that much different" -- I really feel ashamed right now because I can totally see someone who isn't tech savvy falling for that line. Nice launch day Apple :) Needless to say, I just ordered one online -- after I turned down the c2d mbair the salesperson said it could be up to a week before they get the new ones in store (again, lol) -- same with the mac minis.

Also if you're looking to grab an i7 option in either the new mac air or mac mini -- don't plan on getting one from a store. The retail locations and all resellers will ONLY stock the i5 models...the only exception being the "mac mini with lion server" -- that one only comes in the i7 option. This imho is pretty darn stupid, especially when the cpu upgrade is only around an extra 100 bucks...you'd be stupid NOT to get the i7 in either device imho, but they are all "configure to order" besides the mac mini with lion server.

Would it be pointless to trade in my second gen MBA for the new one?

You can tell he wrote the text in this article ahead of time using all of the rumors out there, then he pulled the listed specs from the press release, and never went back and corrected the items in the text. I'm pretty disappointed in TUAW right now for not correcting it before posting. There's mistakes all over the place in the text of this article-- the base model does still only have a 64 GB drive, the base model does still only have 2 GB of memory, and there's no option for 8GB of memory in any model.

I can barely tolerate Kelly's constant biased, cheerleader based, 'Apple can do no wrong' reporting style (just read her articles and headlines, she's the only one who injects commentary into them), but from the better folks on the site like Chris, I expected more.
