Say Goodbye to the White MacBook (Updated)

Update: The MacBook will continue to be available to educational institutions, Engadget reports.

With the launch of the new Sandy Bridge MacBook Air models, Apple has sent its US$999 MacBook to the graveyard. All links for the older white MacBook model are gone from Apple's website and now redirect to the Mac landing page.

Though we will miss the venerable white model, it only makes sense. The new 13-inch MacBook Air is souped up enough to replace the MacBook for most people and the Air's US$999 price tag is reasonable. If a grand is too much to drop on a new OS X Lion machine, the new Core i5 Mac Mini may fit the bill with its starting price tag of $599. Yeah, its not a portable like the other models, but it does get you into a Lion computer for cheap.

In some respects it is sad but you have to consider just how awesome the SSD drive in the MacBook Air makes it compared to the old MacBook. No, it doesn't have the same storage capacity but the performance it delivers means it run rings around the old MacBook. I'm sad but I'm not that sad - I'd buy the Air over the MacBook any day of the week.

..its sad, it was nice to have an entry level OSX system w/ mechanical HDD (large built in storage) & a discrete video card. I for one feel that integrated video cards, while ok for today, never age well. Its one of my baselines for any system i intend to by & it has served me well, you really can get a longer life out of the computer... I hope Apple reconsiders & brings one back...

This makes me kind of sad. I've had three friends/relatives buy that model in the last few months. It seems like a really nice machine, which is why I kept recommending it to people. The Air is really slick, but there's something to be said for ports and a superdrive occasionally.

But I was also one of those people who wanted a laptop with a floppy drive for as long as possible, just in case. Time marches on.

This is a bummer, at least for us from the beaches and Taxes country.
The current air is costing two times the price of the white macbook, and we can`t even pop-up one 1TB HDD on the thing.

Apple doesn't just drop products from their line for fun, the white Macbook obviously must not have been selling well for a while. The $1200 Macbook Pro seems like it's a better value with the aluminum body and recently has had better specs.

Makes me kinda sad.
Well, I do have 2 MacBook Pros already because their specs could be maxed higher than the specs on the white MacBook and the MBPs were available in 17" too, but I liked that design really much. Was even thinking about buying that one for my mother eventually.

Aluminum is sturdier, better for college life? I don't think so. Looks awesome but you have bumps and scratches in no time, no matter how cautiously you are treating the MBPs. On aluminum you can see EVERYTHING. On white plastic, you can only get scratches and those are less visible (seen on a friend's white MB). Since I actually use my MBPs for studying an university and also used them in high school, I can tell you by experience aluminum really isn't the material of choice for that.

Give us back the white MacBook back Apple, please!

Sorry for the typo, of course it's "at university", not "an university".

Called it a week or two ago. Ah well, I would have done the same thing. Now they re-brand the MacBook Pro as the MacBook and they're all done.

Your article is misleading. In it, you make it sound like the 13 inch MBA is $999. The 11" is that price, the 13" is still $1300.

It was inevitable. I had family looking to buy macbooks for college last year but for the money they were better off going with the macbook pro. Much more of everything for a small price difference plus the machine being that much sturdier for college life. For those just needing the basics for anything the MacBook Airs now fill that role. The only thing I see is the disparity of disk space between the Macbook Air price range and Macbook pro for some people. I see the 13in Macbook pro as the new entry level Mac personally with the Air filling the travel and extra portable niche.
