Poll: Lion's "natural scrolling" vs. "reverse scrolling"

One of the first things that new users of OS X Lion are apt to either completely love or hate with a passion is the change to "natural scrolling." This is like scrolling on an iPad or iPhone -- when you use two fingers to swipe down on a trackpad, whatever you're scrolling moves in a downward direction as well. The existing method, which I'll refer to as "reverse scrolling," has been in use since the first Apple Lisa shipped in 1983. With reverse scrolling, swiping down on a trackpad would move content in a browser window in an upward direction.

While recording a MacJury last night with host Chuck Joiner, MacObserver's Jeff Gamet, and The Loop's Peter Cohen, the comments from my fellow jury members seemed to indicate that most of us had very little trouble making the switch. Those of us at TUAW are interested to find out what kind of scrolling setup you're using on your Mac. Take the poll and let us know.

What kind of scrolling are you using on your Mac?
Lion "natural scrolling" -- the default setup in OS X Lion6291 (43.7%)
Lion "reverse scrolling" -- the old way of scrolling from OS 1.0 until OS X 10.6.85423 (37.6%)
I haven't upgraded my Mac to Lion yet1643 (11.4%)
I don't own a Mac184 (1.3%)
I use "natural scrolling" on an iOS device instead of a Mac316 (2.2%)
Who needs a pointing device? I use telekinesis to move things on my computer.548 (3.8%)

the natural scrolling doesn't seem natural at all. it hurts my brain and makes my hand cramp up.

Does anyone besides me feel that Apple should have reversed the scroll direction of the arrow keys on the keyboard, too? I mean, to keep with the metaphor that we're pushing the content up when we swipe up, pressing the up key should also push the content up.

This inconsistency bothered me enough that I wrote a Safari extension that "naturalizes" keyboard scrolling. Of course, it only works in Safari. You can get it at http://canisbos.com/natkeyscroll if you want; it's free.

Wow thanks! I was just about to write one myself because yes, that bugs the hell out of me too.

For me, natural scrolling works OK for content viewing, but it doesn't work as well for actively repositioning the curser for content creation. For repositioning the cursor, it is backwards from the single-finger cursor movements and it is backwards from the scrollbars. I'm sticking with the reverse scrolling.

Watch the scroll bar at the left, and it moves in the opposite direction to how you scroll. There. Stupid.

I like the natural scrolling a lot. It took some getting used to but luckily as I've used iDevices for years and years, it was a quick and much loved adjustment.

I was using Scroll Reverser in Snow Leopard. After a bit, it just makes more sense.

I decided to give the natural scrolling a chance, and convinced myself to put aside my astonishment and anger for just a couple of days. The Cupertinasians couldn't collectively gone mad, could they? If Apple so much wanted me to scroll the iOS way, maybe they knew something I had yet to find out. I vaguely remembered doing it wrong intuitively when I got my first trackpad, years ago. So maybe some wisdom was to be found behind the remarkable decision.

After about a day of irritating mistakes, I got used to it. And i like it. It does feel more natural. I recommend giving it a try, keep it up for a day and some, and repeat the mantra "think iPad".

Here's the thing. I prefer the reverse scrolling for up and down, but the natural scrolling works better for side to side.

Oddly, I started with Lion with "Natural Scrolling" and very quickly switched it back "Reverse Scrolling". However, I've actually found myself subconsciously starting to try and use the "Natural Scrolling" while "Reverse Scrolling" was enabled. So now I've reenabled "Natural Scrolling" and it actually feels better. Weird, huh?
