The Washington Post reflects on Lion's first week of availability
Like the rest of us, the Washington Post is taking a look at Lion after a week of use. It's mostly positive, but writer Hayley Tsukayama finds Lion a bit quirky. Chief criticisms are the change to natural scrolling (which can be turned off) and some of the complicated gestures when using a track pad. Mission Control also gets a thumbs down.
The positives from Tsukayama's perspective are the stability, overall simplicity and increased security of Lion. The article suggests a person test drive it for awhile before pulling the trigger if you harbor some doubts. I know in my case I turned off many of the new features to make Lion more like Snow Leopard. I was also disappointed in the mail bugs (it just doesn't work with some POP accounts and I have a 13 year old legacy account I still want to use) and my network attached storage is defunct unless I get (fingers crossed) a firmware update.
OK, readers. After a week of use is Lion a hit or a miss for you? Or more of a mixed bag? What should Apple do to make you happy?

Bought it, installed it on an external disk, it screwed things up mightily, went back to Snow Leopard.
Unfortunately, the fact that I blew $30 on it counts as a vote in favour, because Apple apparently isn't counting who is actually *using* it.
My only complaint is I can't upgrade my work Mac book pro and I have two different sets of gestures to use. I'd love to see gestures common across devices when possible. Overall and as someone who recently came from the PC world, I like this OS.

Only the frame zoom is possible, and even the hotkey setting in advanced options is bugged.
To make me happy Lion should provide:
1. the same features of expose+spaces - show all windows of all applications of all spaces
2. the option to turn off autosave/versions and get "save as" back
3. the option of permanently disable the "restore-every-window-after-boot"
4. the option to disable the application save state
Are you kidding, guys? Lion is the best, more intuitive, easy to use, and the Spaces in Snow Leopard left something to be desired. 4-finger swipe to change spaces? Brilliant!
People, as always, are just scared of change.
My only problem is using another monitor. I work at conferences and stuff - and I just can't mirror displays! The whole "new space" for full-screen apps is extremely annoying when using an external monitor!
I just find it hard to believe that a major update to OS X is still just $30. What's a major update to Windows cost?

July 31 2011 at 2:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI love it, it's more intuitive than ever, switching between frequent apps is a breeze, but I'm a power user and I can't imagine that everyone will love the changes - they certainly help me work faster, that's for sure.

didn't like the natural scrolling at first and and as one person already mentioned turned it off, but since turned it back on an forced myself to use it. took about 2 days and now...well it's natural :)
the biggest complaint was the connection to my NAS, but i found the terminal commands to set in order to make it work, so i'm fine now.
love mission control, i'm up to 6 desktops now for various functions and it's easier than ever to navigate to them.
overall i think lion is solid, and there will always be tweaks to make things better, but this is technology and it's constantly evolving. it's the world we live in.
anxiously waiting iOS 5 and new iphone/ipad :)
skp
Need to restore the old clamshell behavior. It's very annoying that you can't open up your laptop while attached to an external screen (for better cooling) without being forced into dual-screen operations, which, lets face it, OS X is still ridiculously limited in.
Apart from that, I'm lovin' it.
