How saving changed in Lion - Infographic

You can check out the full-size images in the gallery below, but clearly Lion thinks about saving documents differently. Read more about versions and locking documents in this post.
Note: If you're having an issue with the image loading in the gallery, click one of the thumbnails and it should load. There's an issue with our CMS which we're still trying to fix. Our apologies.
Another note: Once the thumbnail loads, right-click the image and choose View Image to get to the full-sized image.
Final note: Or download or view the full sizes here:

I'm a software configuration management engineer. It's my job to understand version control. But explaining it to non-techies is nigh impossible, and Apple wants everyone to learn how it works. I love OSX, Apple, but this bites and was never needed. You're putting threads on a nail, and we don't need them. If we want version control, there are a half-dozen free and dozens of paid apps that do it better.
And TUAW, these graphics are almost illegible at this resolution, even with my glasses on. Try again.
Agreed, but you should probably just try reading the article and following the links to the actual pictures...
August 11 2011 at 8:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm keeping my internal jury out on this until I have more experience working with the new system. Right now I'm still blundering around whenever I edit something in Pages, but I'll eventually wrap my head around it. At that point I'll finally be qualified to decide whether it's an effective system or not.
I wonder how new users feel using it, somebody without years of ingrained habits... Apple is pretty good at taking the long view, so it may well be here to stay if it truly is easier for new users to work with.
This new versioning BS is a real show stopper for me. Is there any way to turn the damn thing off?
August 11 2011 at 3:40 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis isn't correct.
"Revert to saved" Doesn't bring back the most recent version, it shows a list of previous versions...
I find this to be a very confusing visualization of the save process before and after Lion. I find it oddly fitting though, because Lion's save process seems very convoluted and unclear to me as well for anything other than basic edits on a single copy of a file.
August 10 2011 at 6:28 PM Report abuse Permalink +3 rate up rate down ReplyI know this is off topic, but this post has got to be the worst implementation of showing images I have seen on any website since about 2003. What on earth are you thinking, TUAW???
August 10 2011 at 6:13 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyAs I tried to explain, the group who manages our CMS has failed to provide a better gallery experience, hence the Beta on the redesign. We're actually working on a Quicklook feature for graphics, videos, etc. but we decided to run this before that could be finished up. Sorry.
August 10 2011 at 6:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply@pusta2 No, Photoshop, etc is not impacted by the autosave.... at least not at this point. The application has to support the feature. I don't see Photoshop doing this... that would be a nightmare!

August 10 2011 at 6:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI really liked Lion the first couple of days. But as I get down to serious work I find myself wanting Snow Leopard back. Been trying to give it time but the more I use it the more I think the upgrades or more eye candy and hindrances. There are some good nuggets but just not feeling the efficiency and polish as with Snow Leopard.
August 10 2011 at 6:09 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyI agree completely, and after 3 weeks of Lion I just reverted back to snow leopard and I feel much more productive. The little workflow annoyances are gone as well.
August 10 2011 at 6:25 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyHas anyone used Photoshop Elements or Lightroom on Lion? Does Autosave have any impact in these programs? I do not want changes automatically saved to the file
August 10 2011 at 5:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt probably doesn't explicitly support it so no, it won't autosave or save versions.
August 10 2011 at 6:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySorry dude, Lion is just joining the versioning party here.
Look up shadow copy on google, it's been in Windows since Server 2003.
