Apple’s iCloud service has played a key role in uncovering a massive criminal operation in Brazil. Authorities revealed that an iCloud backup helped expose a $320 million money laundering scheme.
Brazil’s federal police discovered the network while investigating illegal gambling and international drug trafficking. The breakthrough came after officers accessed the iCloud backup of accountant Rodrigo Morgado.
Complex Network Revealed
Once investigators reviewed the backup, they uncovered detailed evidence of a large criminal structure. The data included financial records, contracts, messages, and corporate documents.
As explained in the evidence findings on page 2, this information allowed authorities to map connections between shell companies, influencers, and musicians.
The investigation quickly expanded. Police issued 39 arrest warrants and 45 search warrants across eight states and the federal district.
Influencers and Musicians Involved
Authorities identified several public figures linked to the scheme. Among those arrested were musicians MC Ryan SP and MC Poze do Rodo. Influencers Raphael Sousa Oliveira and Chrys Dias were also detained.
Police allege the group used illegal betting, raffles, cryptocurrencies, and overseas transfers to move funds. They also seized luxury cars, jewelry, weapons, and large amounts of cash.
Role of iCloud in Investigations
The case highlights how digital storage can assist law enforcement. Investigators used iCloud data to cross-reference multiple sources and confirm links between suspects.
However, Apple maintains strict policies on data access. The company only provides information when required by legal orders such as subpoenas.

Apple has long defended its stance on user privacy. The company refuses to create encryption backdoors, even under pressure from governments.
At the same time, it complies with lawful requests for data. This balance remains a point of debate. For example, past disputes with the FBI highlight tensions between privacy and security.
