Apple Watch Series 12 has reached customers with several subtle design changes that Apple did not heavily emphasize at launch. Early users have noticed a larger display bezel and a Digital Crown that extends slightly farther from the case.
The differences appear small, especially without an Apple Watch Series 11 nearby. However, side-by-side comparisons make the changes easier to see.
Larger Bezels Become Noticeable
Users have shared comparisons showing slightly thicker borders around the Series 12 display. The difference becomes clearer when the screen shows a background other than black.
Meanwhile, the Digital Crown also appears to protrude a little farther. However, changes to the surrounding case shape may contribute to that impression.
Apple increased one case dimension by 1mm across both aluminum and ceramic versions. Yet the active display area did not grow with the case. Consequently, the extra space results in slightly wider bezels.
For most owners, the difference should remain difficult to notice during normal use.
Health Upgrades May Explain the Changes
The Series 12 introduces a new Health Sensing system. Apple replaced the previous rear sensor arrangement with a larger sensing surface.
Therefore, the revised internal hardware may help explain the modest increase in case dimensions. The report suggests Apple could need additional internal room for its expanded health features.
Some users have also questioned handwashing detection support. Apple’s compatibility page does not currently list the newest watches for the feature. However, the document notes that Apple may simply need to update the support page.
Apple Prioritizes Health Over a Visual Redesign
Despite the bezel change, Apple has not dramatically redesigned its mainstream smartwatch. Instead, this generation places greater emphasis on health upgrades and Audio Intelligence.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 began reaching customers on Friday. Both models are also available through retail stores.
Ultimately, Series 12 delivers meaningful internal changes while keeping a familiar appearance. Existing Series 11 owners may spot the differences, but most users will need a close comparison to see them.
