Apple’s push toward its own cellular technology has taken an unexpected turn. A teardown shows that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max relies on Qualcomm hardware instead of Apple’s C2 modem.
TechInsights examined the new flagship and identified several key components. These include Apple’s A20 Pro processor and N1 wireless module. However, the cellular system uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SDX80M 5G modem.
The discovery highlights an unusual regional difference within Apple’s latest Pro lineup.
US Pro and Pro Max Take Different Paths
Apple promotes its C2 cellular modem as part of the iPhone 18 Pro. Yet its US specifications reveal an important distinction between the two Pro models.
The US iPhone 18 Pro specification includes the “Apple C2 cellular modem.” By contrast, Apple leaves that entry blank for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The teardown now explains that omission. Instead of the C2, the larger US model carries Qualcomm’s modem.
Meanwhile, the RF board contains components from several other suppliers. They include Broadcom, Skyworks, Qorvo, Texas Instruments and NXP. Apple’s N1 module handles Wi-Fi connectivity.
C2 Modem Appears in Pro Max Models Overseas
The modem difference appears limited to the United States. Apple’s specification pages for Canada, the UK, France and India show the C2 in both Pro models. Other international markets follow the same pattern.
Therefore, Apple has not excluded the Pro Max from its C2 rollout worldwide. Instead, the company appears to have created a specific US hardware configuration.
Apple has not explained the reason for that choice in the material covered by the report. The source suggests Apple’s 2023 agreement with Qualcomm could offer one possible explanation. However, it presents that connection as speculation rather than a confirmed reason.
A Notable Exception in Apple’s Modem Strategy
The finding matters because Apple continues expanding the use of its own wireless technology. Still, the US Pro Max shows that the transition does not follow one hardware formula across every market.
For US buyers, the difference means the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max use different cellular modem suppliers. For now, Apple’s international models tell a different story, with the C2 appearing across both Pro variants.
