New widgets in Mac OS 10.4.4

Have you grabbed Mac OS 10.4.4 from software update yet? Then launch the Dashboard and check out your spiffy new widgets. I've found a few that are definitely new, and some that I don't think I recognize, but I've got a lot installed, so who knows.

First of all, Apple's calendar widget has received a facelift. The new calendar features white text on a black background and a horizontal orientation. There are now two phone book widgets, one for "people" and one for "businesses." Appropriately enough, the business widget is yellow and the people grey. There's a Google widget I'm pretty sure I haven't seen before, as well as a quite nice one from ESPN. Have I missed any? Let us know.

The above Link Seems to be bad trying again. The article is called: Keep the old red calendar widget from 10.4.3.

There seems to be at least a couple of ways to retrieve and reinstall the old widgets for those that weren't aware the old ones were to be deleted. I just reinstalled a couple of them, and this from some advice at Mac OS X Hints. Follow the link to the article. http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060111154242630.

I
opted to just open the package, not rename, and just put the old widget file in a folder to use as I see fit, and to keep the new ones as well. Enjoy...

Sincerely, Steve

Can someone who has the old Calendar widget upload it somewhere or send it to my email? Don't like this one that much...

I concur on the "iCal Events" widget. This one gives you the upcoming events and color coded based upon your calendar.

I would have thought that the new calendar would have had options for customizing. This one is BIG! I guess I am going to have to go and steal my friend's 23" monitor.

Shouldn't you be able to just put the old version of the calendar into the Widgets folder? (Granted you saved it somewhere... - maybe somebody can email it to you?)

I am not a fan of the Dashboard anyways; wastes too much CPU once it's activated. And even when you kill any of the widgets in the Terminal, they just launch themselves again. (BTW: did you know that at least the Dashboard wastes less CPU power when you take the Dashboard icon out of the Dock?!)

When I was still playing around with the Dashboard, I used this calendar widget called "iCal Events".

how do you turn dashboard off again?

just kidding... i actually use the calculator once in a while (although maybe I should just assign calculator.app to F12 and disable dashboard and free up some CPU/memory)

The new calendar is a total step backwards, what were Apple thinking? I don't need to be told what the date is in 3ft high text - I can get that from my menubar clock - and the only section that you can hide away is the useful bit! Just dumb.

I bet the downloads of simple 3rd party calendars will see a sudden increase.

Also I don't see the point of a Google widget (considering Safari already has the Google search field built in)? It adds more keystrokes to search something using the widget than it does to just go to Safari in the first place.

Yeah, I agree--the calendar sucks. Plus I'm never going to use any of those new ones. I don't ski, like sports (c'mon, I'm a computer guy!) don't own stocks, use Firefox to search Google and have all my phone numbers in my cell phone. As for addresses, I only need to look them up rarely.

Man, I wish they had at least taken a survey on swapping out the calendar. I liked the old one just fine...
