Yeah, yeah, yeah, you New Yorkers get everything.* During this afternoon's financial conference call, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer announced that a third Big Apple store is being planned. It's been suggested that this building at 401 West 14th Street will be the third store's location. At 52,000 square-feet, it would house one heck of a store.*Except when my Red Sox hand you three losses in a row. You're welcome.

The amazing thing is that Toronto already has three Apple Stores. Torontonians will no doubt use this fact as further evidence that T.O. really is the centre of the universe.

I've heard that Barneys has already spoken for the building. You Weblogs people already had the story here:

Plus, it wouldn't make sense for Apple to setup shop on one of the most expensive retail corners in downtown Manhattan where they'll be dealing with a drunk B&T crowd stumbling out of stretch Hummers and into the sceney clubs adjacent in every direction at all hours of the night.

14th and 9th ave is a little off the beaten path for an Apple store. I'd expect they'd want to put it in an area where they'd get more than just neighborhood traffic.

Union square makes the most sense. Uptown is covered and SoHo is covered. I guess they could put one upper westside. Maybe around Lincoln center or Columbus circle.

Another store in NC would be nice, since making the trip to any of them is a 3-4 hour journey off the mountain for me. Something even half the distance would make it actually feasible to make more trips than the pseudo-yearly pilgrimage

I'm not surprised that the wrong apple store is depicted. TUAW seems to chose random pictures for their posts, based on how nice it looks rather than how closely it applies.

If you want to count up all the Apple Stores in the NYC Metro area - then you can compare THAT to the sprawl that is LA.
I checked the list - I counted 14 in the tri state area (NY, NJ, CT) and all in cities/towns that people commute to NYC from every day, most of the towns are also on mass transit lines. I know you can get to the one in West Nyack that way. So when they say NYC is getting its 3rd store - they really mean Manhattan.

NYC's Meat-Packing district is a protected landmark zone, similar to Soho. Thus whatever design of the store is, it would have to be built into the existing facade of the building. They couldn't do a complete refresh, like the San Francisco corner store or 5th Ave. Union Square WOULD be a great space for the store, but it's actually quite close to Union Square. Meat-Packing district is boomy-trendy-style now. Lots of money going in there.
